A friends discussion made me start this one. I am a soap fan I watch Days, All My Children and GH. We were talking about how sily they are but yet I must see them everyday. They all have the same kinda predictable stuuf in them. i mean they seem to never know who the daddy is do they?
So my question is does anyone actually have a life like this? I mean does your town have that one truelly evil villan like all soaps do? Do all pregnant woman sleep around? And are there mysterious deaths all the time in your town? Seems silly doesnt it lol?
So if your town was a soap opera what typical character would you be?

I would be the boring housewife. Its sad my life is so dull compared to people on television shows. I have 1 husband that has been with me a long time and we have lots of bills just like everyone else.
I was flipping channels the day of the earthquake and saw Rick Springfield singing on General Hospital. He can come sing for me anytime.

Yeah and on the soaps the only money issues seem to be when they need to bribe someone. My life is also pretty boring thankfully I wouldnt want those kinda issues. So heres to a boring life.

Hi minnie,
It's great to see you again, after my time offline. I do hope you and your baby to be are doing well.
Yes, as a matter of fact, I've had things happen in my life that could be elements in a soap opera. I too watch Days, and I like the more realistic story lines, but sometimes the silly ones are a great comic relief for me. In fact, some recent events that have occurred here, could be part of a soap storyline. If I were a soap character, I'd be the wise (sometimes) grandma, dispensing words of wisdom, listening, and lending a helping hand where I can. I think all 'soap towns' have at least one of these types of character. Take care.

Good to see you as well. We are doing okay been feeling pretty pregnant lol really thinking she wants to come early we will have to see.
Days is my favorite as well but sometimes i just cant help but laugh at the crazy storylines.
Yeah they do all seem to have the wise grandma or grandpa and for the most part they dont have much drama.

When's your actual due date? I remember it's in September sometime.
Days is the only one I watch, and I record them to view at a later time. I've got yesterday's and today's to watch still. Even though some of it is absolutely ridiculous, like the 'stealing' of John's memory by Stefano etc., it's still enjoyable. That's true about the grandmas and grandpas, except for the occasional incident, like Shawn losing his life in that plane crash storyline, and Caroline being imprisoned on Stefano's island awhile back.

One thing about soap operas is that they are all good-looking which is not really believable so right there my belief system is being challenged. To follow the plot? You have just lost me because I never even make it to the next commercial.

Oh, my life is totally a soap opera. I have too much drama for one person and more. I have 4 boys and two of them are bipolar.
Then there is the arguing over girls, clothes, legal problems, I have been divorced twice and the drama with dealing with my two exs sometimes are or were awful.
My second ex is homeless, so he is staying here and my two boys are so happy. My current hubby has total trust in me and there is nothing there between my second ex at all. I do feel sorry for him because when we got together and got married I didn't relize that he had some mental issues and holding down a good job is hard for him because he quits and thinks that he can get a better job and he doesn't. Even his boys feel bad for him. I can't put him out on the street because that would be against what I have taught them to help people out.
I have taken in young kids and adults that have had problems. So I have taught them to care and if I would show that I don't care, what would that teach them.
So, there is always drama in my house.

Nope, sorry to say things are pretty dull in my corner of the world. I'm kind of alone in my little house in the woods kinda like a hermit. I dont interact with alot of people just hubby, pets and sometimes my son. It is pretty quiet out here, and I'm ok with it. I like ot have people around but not all the time.

Hmmm, not really sure, I do know one thing. If you girls want a soap opera guy, then you have to be a soap opera girl.

I'm that friendly, cheerful nextdoor neighbour who has a serious side and a mysterious past but no-one suspects ... lol. I've even got the right name ... these characters are always named "Penny"!
Unfortunately, in reality, our community is not very exciting.

Mine is to the point where the lead character gets had all the time. You're right about the predictability. I haven't watched a soap in over a decade, but, as a writer, I can guarantee you that I can tell you what the dialogue is going to be, 30 seconds before they say it.

This is not directly responding to your question but it is sort of related!
I remember an interesting discussion with an American (I am British) friend about the huge differences between the most popular American and British programs and how this reflected the nation character. In America shows dwell on successful characters and envy-worthy lifestyles (of course with some melo-drama thrown in!), which reflects the aspirational ethos of the American people. I mean to say that the 'American dream' seems embedded in the consciousness and people aspire to be better, get better and get in on some of the action!
The British soaps on the other hand, feature troubled characters, mundane settings and depressing situations. The British are (very generally) a group of jolly pessimists, contented by watching others in more dire situations and mutter things like 'well, at least I'm not THAT bad!'.
Would you agree or do you think that is grossly over simplifying??

I havent seen any british soaps so im not sure but I do agree that our soaps are all about whealthy people who have issues. But i still find myself thinking even with all that money im still glad I dont have their lives. I mean I dont need that much drama at all.

Not sure what character my husband and I would be, ut we are definitely living in a soap opera. I think we'd hae to e ourselves starring in our very own soap opera. My husand has writte numerous screenplays, and is working on a sci-fi series righ now that he wants to pitch to the TV world, so what's to stop us from writing a soap opera based on our nutty crazy lives? LOL

My life is so boring and uneventful, that my character would be killed off during the first week!
The biggest scandal in my community is whether to allow them to build an off-track betting parlor on the north side of town. The debate is getting heated. I can't wait for some real scheming and back-stabbing to ensue!
This past election, it was exciting when a young guy won a seat on the board of trustees. The scandalous thing about him is that he has a ponytail.

most of soap operas and tele-novelas (as how spanish calls it) is really based on truo life so one way or another we can rely on it. it maybe made in another form because of sinematic purposes but it is based on true life. i am a single mom of four children i left my husband and brought my children with me. he is an abusive man. so i think in a way my life is a soap spore lol. i am still waiting for a guy i will grow old with and while doing that i am workinf har for my children.

I could beleive they are based on true life just not one towns lifestyle lol. Too many bad things happen to the same people all the time.
Sorry you have the problems you do my ex never hit me but he was emotionally abusive and that was hard enough to deal with for me. Give it time your prince will come some day.

i would have to say nope. i hate drama and i dont wana be any part of it. so i tend to not take part in some of my friends problems and issues. personaly i dont understand how some people can be around drama or even deal having it around them.
