Earlier today while i was playing with my dog and laughing at him because hes a big goof, i wondered about how he might express laughter and if dogs even laugh?
I know they can be sad and they cry and show happiness by wagging their tails but How do dogs express laughter? Can they laugh? have you ever heard a dog laugh?

One of my favorite subjects!! Recent studies have shown that dogs do laugh! You know when you play with them and they start to pant or stand there with their tongues hanging out? That's how they laugh! My dogs do that--Gus will come up and jump on my lap, lick my face and stand on my chest panting (even in freezing weather), laughing at my astonishment!
They don't laugh with sound, but with body language. Gus and Cookie laugh a lot, mostly at each other. Gus will have something Cookie wants but won't give it up. So Cookie pretends there is something to bark at and shoots out the doggie door, Gus is not far behind. As soon as he's out, she goes and gets his chew stick and when he comes back in, she looks at him with her tongue hanging out, slightly panting. It's hilarious, they keep me sane with their humor.

They're an endless source of amusement! They "attacked" the AT&T guy this morning who came to fix my system that was just installed last week, licking and jumping and vying for his attention. Poor guy, someone stole his dog over Memorial Day, so he was very pleased at the doggie attention!

I've never heard a dog make a noise that could be called laughter but they certainly show happiness. My dog smiles a lot and 'talks' when she gets excited. It's a perculiar noise that is half bark half howl! She usually does it when she's waiting for her treats or to have her lead put on, so my hubby says she's telling us to 'hurry'.
The nearest thing I've seen to laughter from her is when she jumps up at my lap and starts panting. She has a silly grin on her face as well and the more I push her the more she grins and pants. She knows that she has me beaten! She's a large German Shepherd and I'm small and only weigh 100lbs.

That would be really cool if they could talk. I have heard dogs talk before
say words like "mommy, hello, i love you" I'm not sure how you train a dog to speak though lol but if you look on youtube.com for talking dogs you'll find videos of some it is really cool!

Maybe the dog is just happy, dogs don't laugh because humour is exclusive only for human. Our Church's minister told me that.

i ever wondered about this.. i guess no animals can laugh it my laugh but it cannot show it off to us like humans does by widening their mouth they might feel it inside, its just my opinion and i always assume ( when i was a kid ) that dog smiles when it puts it tongue out or when it salivates lol...

Hello!
I don't think that dogs do laugh. I think that they get happy and wag their tails, as you have already said. It is clear to see when a dog is happy, it gets full of energy aswell. Now, about laughing, I find it hard. I have never heard of any dog who laughs, at least. Perhaps he find things funny, but I can't tell you if he will make any noise. Try noticing his body, dogs express through body activity more than through noises.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

I read in a dog book that when dogs make that kind of panting sound when they are running around that that is them laughing. That makes sense because my dog usually makes that noise when I have just returned from somewhwere and he is very excited.
It is really cute when he is making that little laughing noise.

oh, i'm sure they do !
i've heard dogs, snort and whine, like they are laughing.
but, once you discover how your dog laughs, what will you do when he stands there and laughs at you ? you'll laugh back, of course. then he will laugh at you more!
i have 2 cats. they don't laugh. they have a great deal of sarcasm though.

Laughter is a noise right??? I think dogs definately show happiness... I'm sure they find things amusing... but no vocal cords no laughter. My dogs bounce and circle when they are really happy.... but have never heard a laugh
