Well since I'm from Greece let me tell you what I know... Ancient Olympic Games started around 800BC and they took place on the Olympia's stadium... Their prizes were olive wreaths and also as tribute for the winners of the Olympics while they were arriving back their hometowns they ruined some part of the city wall (cause this was symbolizing that they wanted to show the others that they have the toughest one here)... Also during Ancient Olympic Games the city-states (as the city state of athens, city of sparta, etc) they were stopping each war they might be on.. This was called "olympiaki ekehiria"... They were stopped around 400AC (by a Byzantium King that I can't remember) cause they thought they were some kind of cult (violently)... If you want you can learn more on the wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Olympic_Games
