I am seriously considering this option and I just want to know what you think and how it works.

I have one very important tip. Stay far far away from Publish America. They are a scam and you will definitely be sorry if you have anything to do with them. Oh and don't go with self publishing until you have exhausted every chance of having your writing actually published.

Oh, I intend to query and submit until my fingers bleed from typing so much, but that can only last so long. I believe in my book, but I am not sure how to get a publishing house to agree. Finding an agent is an option, but it is hard to do that too and know you are getting a quality agent.

Now, now, I am with Publish America. For a first time writer, it's completly legit, you don't have to pay millions just to get the book published. Now, I'd say find yourself an agent for the book. That's what I would do. but, STAY AWAY FROM SELF PUBLISHING, unless you want to be broke!

Oh, did you frame your $1.00 advance? Have you gotten one of those $0.00 royalty checks? Do you have a lollypop tree with the title of your book printed on the sticks? Are you good friends with pipe smoker or the French woman?

Well, if you ask me the greatest problem to overcome this is the cost. But if you have the spare money then I urge you to do so. No matter what others may say as long as you are passionate with what you are doing then I doubt it can go wrong, and on the slight chance that it does you'll learn a valuable lesson so there is really no bad site do this now is there? Mind if I ask what book are you trying to publish?

Well of course I want a legit site to work with. In most cases I have seen, if they are charging it is fees I can't afford to throw away on someone that doesn't help me make the best book we can make. If I am paying to publish, then I expect quality all the way. My book is a fictional historic based tween novel. I am targeting 9-14 year olds with this series. I am fairly certain there aren't any other books like it on the market.

One of the easiest ways is to create it in pdf format and distribute it in an ebook format, of course you charge for it to be downloaded by anyone who is interested, but there is the marketing side of it that you would have to do yourself as part of the deal this way, which can be quite difficult. At least if you get an actual offline publishing deal the publishing company usually handles all the marketing.

Good luck, writing is usually easy, getting it OUT there is the task of tasks!

Well, I will first and foremost try to get it published through a house. That is my goal. I just don't want them to change it too much. Then again, I can just be stubborn like my favorite, brilliant authors. I am quite excited about this and will do what it takes to get it out there. And if that means I end up doing all the work myself, then I will. I am giving myself a whole year to get it through a publishing company. Whether a direct submit or agented.

I self-publish my own small, poetry zines. I simply lay it out the way I want it and network with a local artist to do my cover. Then my local copy store runs it off for me. I sell them at local, arts events and my favorite local, independent bookstore lets me sell them there, too. I also a lulu.com account. It's free and print on demand. As much a don't like the tone of one responders to your discussion; I hear bad things about Publish America, too.

What genre is your book? You have to be very careful with self-publishing. You need to have an editor. My book, Cat-House Sonnets, 100 poems celebrating cats, was published by Jorlan Publishing. They did an excellent job and were a joy to work with. They had an artist do the cover and a layout expert to design the inside. Check it out at www.jorlanpublishing.com/Cat-HouseSonnets.htm My book won the Muse Medallion Award from Cat Writers Association and the Best Poet from Preditors & Editors. You have to market your book yourself even if you go with a standard publisher. They accept very few books and take years to go through the process. You need to find out where your market is and do plenty of work to sell a book. I wish you lots of luck.

I do know about genres. And I know different publishers focus on different areas. Some just take picture books for a certain age, some just take adult fiction, some just take chapter books for older kids, some take a little of everything. I get that. I have done my research before, but I just am not sure how I want to go about doing it and now that I got what I feel is a great novel idea, I don't want it to get buried under indecision like the others have. I will have to check that site out. I know it will take quite awhile for publishing houses to get things going. It is a lot to think about.
