Friendship between a guy and a girl

Is it possible for a "straight" guy and girl to remain friends? Why does everyone always take it the wrong way or assume after they hung out or watched a movie that they are automatically sleeping with each other? Just because some physical attraction occurs or one may find the other one attractive, but the other doens't see it this way...doesn't mean things will evolve. Why does everything always have to focus around the physical aspects? I find this very difficult as I am female and get along with guys more than girls and I hate how its always perceived. I find it frustrating in that I just want to hang out and have fun but the second someone finds out it turns into you are sleeping with each other when in reality thats not at all what is going on
