Do you avoid the news on TV because of all the Negativity?

I sure do.. I swear the main goal when the news comes on is to let you know all the horrible stuff that has happened. It does affect my moods terribly if I watch too much. Sometimes I think the best antidepressant one could have is turn off the TV or at least don't watch the news. We don't have to or need to know about all the negative stuff, do we?
Would like to hear others views on this topic.

Hi there ribbon1226!
There are times when I watch the news because I find some of their features interesting. However, I must admit that there are times when I would rather watch other shows rather than the news as there's too much bad news on air. With all those negative and bad news, I would just feel depressed. Bad economy, poor governance, crimes and a whole lot more! Geez! Give me a break!

You sound a lot like me. I guess that is how I got into channel surfing. First and foremost to avoid the way too many commercials that come on over and over. But now I am doing it also to avoid all the negative news they seem to tell you over and over in case you missed something...lol
Thanks so much for responding...and try the channel surfing- watch interesting news and when it gets depressing, jump to a comedy (unless there is a commercial on)

It is true that the majority of the news reports are bad but I have to watch it every day. I feel that I need to know what's going on especially locally where I live.

Thats how a lot of people around me feel. And I guess you want to know what is going around locally. Basically, it all comes down to the power we have to get up and walk away or turn it off if it gets too ugly.

Thats a good idea if you enjoy watching the news...just avoid the worst. I think that is probably the way most handle it.
Thanks so much for responding.

Sometimes I do that and simply listen to music-there are times when news men make news too negative to b liked!

Great idea...I should listen to music more than I do. And we have so many choices on types of music now.

The sad part is that there are positive things happening..they just seem to think we like to hear the bad only.
So far the best solution for me is not watch it and watch a funny program instead. Otherwise I would be depressed all the time.
Thanks so much for your response.

Have you ever heard any good news on the news? Every story has two sides to it and I find it very funny that the media always has to put the bad spin on it! I have my class do a food drive every year and do you think I can get one media person even interesting in coming down and checking it out? If there was a bomb threat or something else bad I am sure they would beat feet to get there! I think you're right about just leaving it turned off. Or better yet, watch a cartoon movie like Land Before Time with your child or grandchild, it is a lot easier on the brain as far as stress is concerned!

You are right, it is not often we get to watch any good news. Imagine if it were reversed and they pushed to get all the good news out. I would rather hear about a teen that did something great than a teen that did something horrible to his fellow students. They almost seem to glorify what the bad ones do by going over the story again and again without missing one negative detail. Instead, lets make the ones that do the good deeds be are topics of the day. Imagine how much that alone could change one's outlook on the day.
By the way, how awesome that you have your class do a food drive every year. If I did the news, that is the kind of story I would lead with :)
