I saw on the TV babies swimming in a pool underwater. Is it true that they can hold their breath underwater? If so how long can they hold? Would they know when to come up to take a breath?

Okay, I'm not sure if you would say the baby was really swimming underwater. But maybe it was. I would say more like squirming around trying to get to the surface. Babies don't breathe underwater. If they did, they would drowned just like all other humans. Babies aren't breathing underwater, when they are born underwater. The babies lungs are filled with liquid when they are in the womb, which this keeps the lungs inflated. The baby gets oxgen from the cord just like food. When the baby takes it's first breathe, the liquid is drained from the lungs. The baby doesn't take it's first breathe until it comes up from the surface. That is why people say babies can breathe underwater.

So they can't actually breath underwater but I just wonder how they could stay underwater and hold their breath?

Well, if they were just born they would still have the liquid in their lungs and would be able to stay underwater. But I'm not sure for how long. They wouldn't be able to go back underwater after they took their first breathe because the liquid in their lungs would be gone.
