Texting and walking... a surefire way to the ER?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25934644?GT1=43001 Check out this story! ********************** Apparently, the warning applies to everyone, from college student Danielle Gonzales to Barack Obama’s adviser, Valerie Jarrett: Don’t walk and text at the same time. Gonzales, a 19-year-old sophomore at San Diego State University, admits she’s stumbled more than once while sending texts on the street. ********************** More available at the above link! Have you ever tripped, stumbled, ran into a pole while texting? How about another person? I text and walk but I walk SLOW lol. I'm not sure what to say about the mishaps while cooking, it's not exactly wise to hold your phone and text while you're OVER the stove. The last thing I want to do is drop my phone in a pot of noodles!

Maybe not a surefire way, but a very probably one :) It would certainly happen to me since I have been known to ran into doors and poles even without the excuse of texting LOL But then again it wouldn't happen to me because even when I put money on my cell and I use it more regularly I do not use it at home - I have my land line phone for that and if I'm doing something else I have it on speaker.

LOL! I watched somebody at the mall walk right into a glass portion of a store wall where they thought there was a door because they were texting. It was pretty funny and I had to get away quickly because I didn't want them to hear or see me laughing. I use my cell at home sometimes - if it's one of my 'free' numbers calling, on weekends, or after 9 pm. I wish there was such a thing as a bluetooth for home phones because it's so much nicer than having to hold the stupid handset. Yes I'm aware I'm getting spoiled! I like to be on the phone while I cook or post or clean or whatever, and for that I need my hands free.

Hehehe that would be me walking into the glass door - minus cell LOL As for bluetooth not exactly but I have a GE phone that is solely to use with earphones. It has a wireless headset and I use it when I'm doing something else and I'm on the phone at the same time :):)

I bought a hands free that plugs into one of my home handsets, but I'd still have to put the phone in my pocket or on the counter right by me in order to not pull the plug. My friend complained that she couldn't hear me very well on it though, so that's why I'd like to find something like a bluetooth that works with landline phones. I hear they exist, they are probably more expensive OR maybe not compatible with my home phone. It's a vtech with 3 handsets

I don't text and move at the same time. Are you kidding? I'd end up dropping down a manhole or something. I can multi task with the best of them, but I also live in very close quarters with Murphy, and his law says if it's gonna hurt, it's gonna hurt me! LOL

Well thanks boo! Now I'm cured and whether there's a manhole there or not, I'll be dropping onto my butt! ROFL. I can just see it! lol

LOL! So you're a walking disaster? Don't walk and eat, don't walk and talk on the phone, don't walk and talk to another person, don't drive and listen to music or a conversation, don't try to drink juice and walk? Hehehe. I can just see you dropping down a manhole with juice spraying out your nose and your cell phone flying up in the air!

Hi mommyboo, I love texting while walking especially if I am talking with friends and txting is cheaper than calling.. I have not tried or experienced any minor accidents in doing so! LOL! So far! But, I have friend who bumped various people because of this!

That's why I do it too... i have a text plan so texting is always cheaper than calling except for certain numbers. My pool of anytime/anybody minutes is small to keep my plan cost down, but I do average a couple thousand minutes to one of my free numbers. I have a few friends that I text daily, plus my kids. Text is a great way to keep in touch with teens, they will text so it works as a reliable way to keep posted and stay up to date on their plans, where they are, etc etc. Whining also does not translate thru text, or if it does, it's not as annoying as it is to HEAR it lol.

I don't think the idea of working with communications devices and getting to someplace else really works out! You need to concentrate on operating the gadget, and thinking on what you want to say, whether by text or voice-it's no surprise to me that concentration may be lost and you'd fail to pay attention to Your surroundings..

The problem is that some people can, and some people cannot, and those who cannot make headlines by getting injured and run over, and it ends up ruining everything for the people who can - who get berated for being able to multitask lol.

I couldn't agree more; I've bumped into countless people while trying to txt and almost got hit by a car. @_@ I must try to be more careful in future.

Um yeah, we do not want you getting hit by a car. As long as people are careful in places like parking lots, it's not a big deal.

Well it's sad that we are being warned of texting while doing things that could hurt us, however it's true that we do need to watch out. I can't believe that a person would be texting while riding a horse (Equestrian) but in all honesty the statement "to each their own" reigns true here!

Oh yes and by the way I can not think of a time that I got hurt while texting. I have dropped my phone in the toilet by accident, um... yea.

I really don't see the point in riding a bike (with no hands) or riding a horse and texting. I hear people complaining about people texting on public transportation or texting as a passenger in a car and I think that is weird. If you're just a passenger, it's perfectly safe to be texting. If you're the driver or rider, probably not so much (as proven by this article!).

i don't even have to read this story to know that doing this is just a bad idea. i mean i do it all the time and i can't tell you how many times i walked into someone. i alway make sure i don't walk into the street. but now i have to watch out that i don't fall into a floor grate that is open by the hotels that i have to walk by coming and going to work

I text more often in the car before getting out, inside stores, etc, than I do walking around outside. Like sparkofinsanity said, we could fall down a manhole lol.

I never text at all when I am out in the street, not only because I cannot concentrate and walk at the same time. But also I am a bit wary of having my phone out in case I get robbed! I try not to text while cooking either, because if I drop mine in a pot on the stove I cannot afford another LOL

Sauteed phone with mushrooms, anybody? LOL! Seriously I would be so dismayed if I cooked my phone. Even with replacement insurance it would be troublesome for me. My daughter threw one in the toilet once and another one she pitched in the trash (when she was 14 months and 18 months respectively) so I am no stranger to losing phones.

this is funny, not that its funny that she stumbles, its just i text and walk at the same time allll the time, i have yet to stumble and fall but i have walked into people and things lmao. but we should be more careful, i almost crossed the street will texting that was scarry, if it wasnt for my son pulling me back and saying "mom ur nuts" lmao i prolly wouldve walked into traffic..its just so additive.. but saftey is and always first.

That's the thing though! It is amazing how much common sense people do NOT have when they are getting injured by texting and walking. I don't get injured, I have bumped or almost bumped into things before but like I said, I walk slow, if I were to collide with something, it wouldn't cause much damage.

This is so ridicuous. What in the world has happened to us...that we think we have to be constantly connected via texting and cell phones? The only texting I do is in response to my son's girl friend's inquiries - "Is he still awake? He's not answering the phone." Sometimes, while she's waiting for a texting response, I'll IM her on the computer or call her cell phone instead. (In defense of her, they are in a long distance relationship. It's not like she can show up at the door any time.) What scares me is the people who text or talk on the phone while driving. As I drive down the street, I can tell which ones are doing that...by the way they're driving. They speed up, then slow down without reason and they swerve a bunch.

I use my handsfree headset in the car, I don't hold a phone. I used to, though before the law was changed. If I'm tired, I don't though because I find it harder to do anything when I'm tired.

LoL. I think people shouldn't do something like that since we could get into trouble. Texting catches a huge percentage of attention meaning our senses our not up at full. Like having your eyes on your phone and texting while crossing the street.. You might wake up in the hospital or worst, in heaven. Hehe. This applies to any other situation, one shouldn't text and do another thing at the same time. Thanks for putting up a discussion like this! Btw, I was texting while typing this response. LoL.

Aha, so you text responses to mylot from your phone? I have done that exactly twice - while I was in Starbucks waiting for my friend to arrive! I have a full keyboard though so it's easier. I just could not believe the article when I saw it, it was one of those that pops up as one of the day's hot stories on msn.

I believe in this day and age of technology especially with phone texting, we have become too overcome with it. I myself never had a habit of texting let alone walk into a pole while doing so. I have walked into a pole just by not watching where I was going! It is something to hear of the accidents that can happen to people just by not paying attention. It happens when people are talking on the phone while driving. People really need to understand the magnitude of the danger it can cause.

This problem reminds me of a warning label I have seen on a hairdryer - do not use while sleeping. I have also seen a warning label on a wood chipper - do not insert any body parts. Ok, here comes what I have to say about warnings like these! To most people, these are understatements. WHY would you use a hairdryer while sleeping or think it was a good idea to stick your foot in a wood chipper? Right, most people would never even have these ideas cross their minds. For some people, they just happened to wade into the wrong end of the gene pool and things like this occur to them quite frequently as a fun idea. They don't think of it in a horrified manner, wondering WHY?!, like most people, they kind of go 'do do do do do... hmmm.. why NOT?' MOST people fall into the first category, they wouldn't do something that dumb. I think MOST people can walk and text. The problems happen when you have one or two that can't, or somebody who gets a horrific head injury or gets smashed flat because they walked into a street. I wish that people did not take these things so seriously and then assume that EVERYBODY would do those things just because a handful of people that garners a lot of media attention do.

I text and drive, text and walk, text while eating...I've never had an accident when doing it, and I don't remember stumbling either. I must just be lucky.

I do that pretty constantly. My phone is perminantly attached to me, and I'm constantly texting with it(I need to upgrade to a full kepboard, t9 is a pain). Hell, I even text while driving sometimes... at red lights and stop signs mostly :p

I do red lights and stop signs too. I use mine for directions occasionally, I just prop it in my lap with the text information displayed so I know where to turn and how far to go. I can access mapquest too so I could even have a map displayed if I needed it. I don't have a navigation system in my car.

Very much true! Texting while walking ompletely distracts you from where you're walking and what is in front of you. If you're lucky its a small pothole or a bump that you stumble on. If not, it can be even more serious ande like you said mommyboo - they can end up in the ER!

I've never understood what is so URGENT that it requires ppl to talk on a cell phone or text someone that ppl would endanger others or themselves. I've seen ppl trying to drive and talk on a cell phone...for God's sake, put the phone down and pay attention to what your doing. The same holds true for texting. Do it when your not trying to do other things like walking, driving, cooking, or working. Ppl don't pay attention to what their doing and then wonder why they end up hurt or in accidents. Personally, I'm glad their banning ppl from driving and using a cell phone...I think they need to do the same with texting. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~
