The CrabFest Craft Show... and reasons why tents are needed...

One of several items that have new homes after Sat - This item was ready to go into my online shop at Etsy.com. But it caught someone's eye and is now in a woman's jewely collection.

Here's the follow-up to the summer craft show thread. Yesterday, I did a craft show that was tied into an Annual CrabFest. Earlier in the week I wondered if I could get by with just a few well-place umbrellas of if I needed to go with a tent. Almost every response suggested using a tent. The weather forcast from early in the week was sunny, hot and humid. The day before the show, it changed to scattered thunder storms (which made sense since it had been in the 90s and humid all week) Of course it looked like rain when I was ready to leave for the show. By the time I arrived, received my spot and began set-up, I felt a few drops of rain. My hubby and I quickly put the tent up and began setting up....and it began to pour! The sellers that are also on Etsy.com, all had tents and we were ready to go at 10:00am when the show started. Most of the other sellers were sitting in their cars until about 9:30ish, waiting for the rain to subside. Vendors were still showing up as late as 11:00 am, but we were all making sales while they were still setting up. So the tent certainly was the way to go!Overall it was a pretty good show, I was busy all day and as the CrabFest began, I had a constant stream of people walking into my tent throughout the show. After the storm, it cleared up a bit and the humidity immediately came back. With the sun back out, it was once again very hot. Many people who stopped by my table picked up/asked for a business card and I did get a custom order from one woman. My sales were pretty good, well worth sitting there in the heat all day. It was nice to see a couple of vendors that I hadn't seen in awhile, along with a couple of Etsy sellers I had never met. So the tent was the right way to go, the rain would have kept me sitting in my vehicle until the rain stopped and w/o the tent I would have been in the sun most of the day. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Am so glad to hear your show went well. Congratulations on a goood day. Ibet it was fun to meet some other Etsy people. I know how the weather is in St. Louis in the summer and a tent is the way to go. It's so unpredictable and humid. I've also seen potential customers wander under a tent to get out of the elements and end up buying something. I love to hear good, success stories about craft fairs/shows. I haven't done any this year. Been too rainy and hot. My other two partners can't take the heat either. What was your best selling item(s)?

The ladies who had a booth with me did sell more earrings and bracelets also. I do know that I'd prefer to keep the same necklace on and not have to fool around with changing to a different one therefore I don't need as many necklaces. Not everyone is as lazy as I am though..lol

The sales were very good, but it was a lot of fun to meet some Etsy sellers. I have chatted with them, shared info with them (sounds a lot like myLot ) and now I can place a face to the name. I don't think they had quite the day I had, but they seemed to be okay with the show, but all of our tables were quite busy at the ned of the day. We also discussed doing a show before Halloween, consisting of mainly Etsy members, so that should be a lot of fun (we may all be wearing costumes also -not thrilled 'bout that)but it should be a lot of fun. Despite being a good show, the heat did take alot out of me and I was still pretty tired despite getting a good night sleep. I didn't do much of anything today and I'm not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. I sold everything pretty evenly. I sold a decent amount of earrings and bracelets. I sold a few sets of glass bubble magnets and a couple of poly clay magnets too. For some reason, this town doesn't buy a lot of necklaces and they didn't buy too many yesterday either. I'll have to remember that later in October when I'll be back for another show. Less necklaces, more bracelets and earrings. Thanks so much for your advice and your response!

Good to hear that your day went well, and you made some sells. It was good thing you listend to us Mylotters huh, or you would of been all wet and sitting out in your car with the rest of them, you would of missed some sales. Thanks...

Yes, it was a very good thing that I listened to my myLot friend's advice. Everyone was right on with their advice (and I'm glad I asked!) I would have been very upset to have a tent sitting at home, while I could've been sitting in my car. Thanks for your response!

Thank you! Even though the weather was ho and humid, it could've been worse and rained all day. The people did come out for the CrabFest and had much more access to the show then the promoter had decribed. There quite a few people who travelled out of state for the crabs and despite the rain, they still came. The custom orders were a nice little extra. Thanks for your response!
