My mom has this theory that people specifically kids and teens read less and less because they are distracted by other things such as tv or internet or video games. Granted that they learn something from it, do you think its better to leave as it is or should you encourage more reading to kids?

I believe this theory as well and I believe we should encourage reading and writing. A good handwriting looks beautiful and is very much appreciated, it's also very important for fine motor skills. Reading can enrich a person and if we put everything on the net it wouldn't be good for our eyes and we would never have a back up. If your pc crashes all the info is gone. Also, not all info on the internet is accurate, and books need to go through a lot more effort before they can publish them to the public. When you read a book on a subject and the book is up to date you can have more faith in the book then most internet sites. Anyone can open those and get a good looking domain name. Also, reading is a part of culture and gives you the oppertunity to learn.

As a reader, I highly recommed reading to anybody, young and old. However, I'm also of the belief that people have free will, and should choose to do what they like. As for kids, I would encourage them to read, by recommending books to them that might be of interest to them. If they like video games, you can choose books that are simlar or even based on their favorite games. You'll be surprised what kids are willing to read once their interests are pique. One thing, though that I do NOT recommend, is forcing them to read, or using reading as a punishment or as a requirement. That is the quickest way to turn them off permanently to reading.

I agree forcing only creates rebellion among kids. So I think kids should be developed in every way possible thus the whole reading thing. Besides, given the right type of reading material kids will be fascinated by books.

I think your mom is also correct, I chose to read as a child rather than watch tv. I think children should be encourage to read as much as possible. I think it does more than educate you, it helps you think and helps you explore who you are and what you'd like to be.

Your Mom is very correct. You should always develop reading habit. TV is truly an idiot box. Research proved that watching too much TV makes the brain dull and also results in lack of concentration. You can watch TV but with restricting on the hours you watch. The case is same with Computer. One should not use it as a tool for playing games only. There are lot of good and informative sites. Books are the best and they can truly be your friend philosopher and guide. A true friend who will not demand anything from you in return.

Wow, I never though of it that way but I guess your right. It is a friend you can turn to no matter what you can lose yourself in a book and you can forget everything if your really into it. Thanks.

i definitely think that it is important to encourage children to read, especially because of the support it will provide them in terms of their studies. additionally, regardless of whether or not the children learn from their internet or cable encounters, it has been proven that the mind is more active when reading as opposed to merely watching.

I totally agree, reading's helped me a lot in my studies. I guess it gave me the imagination that i needed. I'm currently a college student and it's helped me to figure out a lot of things specially during research its an edge i have coz I read faster than most of my colleagues. ehe Thanks for the reply.

Your mon's theory is correct. Children get easily attracted to TV becoz they can see visual images along with the story..requirement of imagination is limited. However, when reading , you are required to understand what you read and in your mind imagine the things you are actually reading. So it stimulates the brain and is very productive. However, instead of forcing children to watch less TV, it would be better to insist on few hours of reading daily. This way, they can see TV , play games and develop the habit of reading too....

Hi riyasan, thanks for the reply. I think your suggestion is correct since the more that you force children to lessen what they like the more they rebel against you. So I guess it's better to just add spare time for reading.

I think your moms theory is correct. Back when your mom and I were kids there werent that many things to do usually you just went outside, you read or you watched tv. There werent computers or other distractions to keep you away. I think kids should be encouraged to read.

yeah i think that should be the case too. Most of my colleagues now at college are very poor at english (I'm studying at the Philippines at the moment but i'm an american citizen half Filipina.) and that is because they don't read much so their english vocabulary is a bit poor.

Watching t.v and playing video games are a lazy way to learn a lesson or recive information. I really think we should enouragekids to read more from a young ge so that they might actually enjoy it later in life. Reading a book can benefit one in so many ways and well worth the time. Whereas kids who watch movies and play video games still learn thins that is no comparison to what reading a book gets you.

You most definatly should encourage reading over tvor internet to children. Not only have studies shown time and time again the advantages ou have in school over those less read but there are now studies that link the lowering age of female mestration to watching tv and thats just weird. My children always choose to be read to over the TV and I hope that will always be the case.

Hi Anderpipe it's nice to see that your kids are interested in reading. As I mentioned in a previous comment I've encountered kids here in my community that have a hard time expressing themselves in English since it serves as a second language to them and since reading helps their vocabulary I think this is one of the reasons why they have a hard time expressing themselves in English and even in their first language.
