have you wondered why a person goes out of his mind?(insanity)

I'm a nursing student and i had my duties with a mental institution. in there you will see a lot of "crazy" people, doing things out of their sanity. they could even hardly their personal hygiene, and staying inside the institution for even just few weeks these people could already get scabies and body lice. while i was there studying and taking care of them, i felt so lucky that i can still think clearly, make judgments and have my decisions. and i have learned that a person cannot be insane because of a single reason only, its a series of situations that he/she have encountered after birth and while he/ she is still growing to be a somebody. the things he see, do and experience has a big impact to his/her personality and will contribute to the cause of her/his being insane. can you share to me an experience about this people? you can send some questions too that i can answer with regards to what i know about and how to handle them too, it would be of great help to those who are having one in the family, or maybe parents who are still rearing their child just to avoid this to happen, remember its not always about the genes but the environment we are in too. have a great time sharing with me okay? thanks..
