When you are in a new city, what places are you going first?

Personally, I am going to the bookstores when I am in a new city. The reason is that I think bookstores are the window on the city. I can understand the city through the bookstore. Look through kinds of books in the bookstore, you will have an idea what the city is like and what the people in the city are like. I think it is an easy and quick way to understand a city. What about you?

I will look around for tourist information center. If there's none, I will go to bookshop to look for maps. If I am hungry, I will look for food first. HAHA.

If i am new in the city. I will look first for the market or the shopping mall. The restaurant too, so that I know where to buy foods and grocery for my need. I think the most important thing is to locate source of food first before anything else.

interesting question. needed some time to think about it. i think the first place i go to in a new city are the malls. i love shopping and i love checking stores. i can stay inside a mall for many hours and not get tired especially if the mall is new to me.

It is tiresome to go to a bookstore just to know the place and its people, culture and environment. Of course we are going to a place closely familiar or something heard about before. And by that, we have a little idea about what life is in that particular place. I will go first in restaurants, food chains, their best food eateries. I love to taste different in that place. By that i can say how do the people their live. By seeing the ingredients of the food, its price, taste and how it is being serve. How the people their eat. How do the crew assists you and how do they art the food house. thanks

When I was in Riga, capital of Latvia I found a delightful bookshop that had many books that were in the English language. I enjoyed looking in some books about Riga and the other areas in Latvia. Then I saw some of the 25 travel experience books that I only managed to get a few last year. So I bought a few more of these because they are no longer for sale in my home country. When I travel I always take with me a good quality travel guide book that has maps of the major cities in that country. I use that map to find my accommodation or the tourist office so I can get a better map. Sometimes my accommodation will be off the map in the travel guide book that I am using. Once I have put my luggage down I go off exploring.

I like to look for historical landmarks. Its neat to stand in a place where a historical event happened. Makes the history of our country seem more real. It may also help my kids learn something.

That's a really nice idea, I haven't thought about going to bookstores for that reason before, but it makes sense, and I have found really great bookshops in some cities I've visited, like some memorable ones in New York and Sydney. I tend to find the tourist office to find out what there is to see there. Apart from this I love to just walk around the city and get a feel for the place and maybe find some interesting things for myself that might not be listed in the tourist leaflets. Another place I go to early on in my visit is the local supermarket. I love to see what type of food people eat in different places. As I'm a big crisp (chip) addict, I particularly like to check out which flavours they have in different countries, lol! But the food in general varies greatly depending on where you go in the world, which I find really interesting. And I love buying local food to try it out for myself.

Personally I don't judge the city with bookstore. Whenever I go tom a city I am new to, I just find out any tour guide for me and let him explain me all about the city. I like to explre myself to and judge the city on all what I see. That's the way I do it.

wow, that's a good idea to go to the bookstore. i will take that in mind for the future :) i usually enjoy going to the places where i can see the culture of the country at best, especially when i am there for the first time. i like going to museums and some popular places among tourists, but do not spend lots of time on that. i want to see the street and night life more, because this is where i can get to klnow people, and see who they actually are. also, a good way to enjoy the country is to go for some festival: modern music or national dances

First of all, it is important to have a map of the city at hand. This way you will know the famous places people often visits. For me, I love to visit their museums. In that way you will learn about their history, it's people and their culture. I also love visiting local stores wherein they sell products that are unique to them. Restaurants are also fun to visit to have a taste of their food. Flea markets also offer great opportunity to buy items that are very cheap.

I usually walk around the block and check on the landmarks, or maybe go to a bookstores too and buy a map or other materials a brochure pehaps that say something about to get familiar with the place. The market and malls would always be my first few places of interest in the area. These are some of the things I usually do when i get to a new city.

I want to go to the bookstores, to the downtown area, to the bank. The bookstores, because that's where you go to meet new people, to just chill out with the wife, especially if you are like me who has a wife who loves to read, to feed her intellect. And you go to the bank, because that is the place to store your money.

I go to the bookstore too, and not just because I love books! I also enjoy checking out the local history. The bookstores usually have a section devoted to local writers, local history, and local folklore. An added plus is the good cup of coffee available in many bookstores where one can peruse an interesting book for free!

When I am new in a city, the first place that I will be going to is the church. I will pray that I will not be lost especially if it is really a big city, that I will be free from danger and lastly, that I can easily find the things which I looked for in the city.
