Hello mothers out there. Please help me with this one. My girl, 3 1/2 go to a a nursery school. Every month, they have a special day where they have a program on a particular theme. During the said occassion they are made to wear costumes appropriate with the theme (e.g. they dress like a vegetable during July when they celebrated Nutrition Month. My prob is, my girl is so particular with what she wears and refuses to wear anything beyond her usual "normal" clothes. She freaks out when you have to make her wear a wig, a gown or whatever that she is not used to wear on a "normal" occassion. She will cry and will not go to school or not enter their classroom. Is this normal? Her classmates seem not have any problem like this. What will I do? They have a program again this Friday and it looks like she will not go to school again if I will coerce her to wear her costume.

I don't see any reason to try to force a 3 year old to wear a costume. Lots of children are afraid or opposed to things adults think are no big deal. Some don't like to dress up, some don't like the Easter Bunny, some are afraid of Santa. Trying to force it is not helping anyone, especially the child. Let her go to school and tell her she doesn't have to wear the costume if she doesn't want to. Maybe you could suggest she wear a color that goes with the theme, like orange instead of the carrot costume.
Adults need to be sensitive to children and what they like and don't like. It is not up to us to dictate to them exactly what they do. Our job is to guide them in learning to make decisions and expressing themselves. She is making a decision not to wear a costume, you and her teachers should respect that.
Perhaps you could try some casual dress up at home and try to role play with her to determine why she doesn't like to wear costumes. Maybe they are uncomfortable or someone laughed at her or she is scared of them or can't see or hear very well when wearing it. There are a number of reasons she might not want to wear it. Determining the cause can help you either understand her reasons or help her work through whatever is bothering her and learn to enjoy, at her own pace and in her own good time, wearing a costume.

I wouldn't force her at all. I think its something that some kids like and some kids don't. Why would you want her to dress up anyway? afterall, it could be worse, she could want to dress in a Cinderella holloween costume all year, and then what would you do?
Maybe you and her could have a project, you could make a shirt that has a picture of the theme. Like, if one day it was knights and princesses, you and her could make a shirt that said 'Little Princess' or maybe have a picture of a princess on it. That's simple enough, at hobby lobby they have this paper where you can print stuff on it, and then iron it onto a shirt.
This way, your child has "normal" clothing that she can wear again, and it goes with the theme at school.

There are other ways she could participate in these days without you forcing her to dress in something she's not comfortable to wear. On veggi week she could wear a regular t-shirt, that the two of you paint veggies on. On a week they are learning about fairytales, instead of strapping funky wings to her back...maybe you could do body art on her cheeks or arms...like henna? Get creative and help your child...and her school...think outside of the box. At this young age, a child should not be "forced" to do anything outside of caring for their bodies and respecting the people around them.

Hi milkfish,
hmmm...sounds unusual for me since I have known kids who will be very excited during that time...ANyway, how about having a friend with her in the house and they are going to change together, like she has company and the friend of her who will influence her to be excited about the event?

A lot of children love dressing up but your little girl is not alone in disliking it. I think its a shame if children as young as this are MADE to wear odd things...(for goodness sake! why would she want to dress like a vegetable??)If its really upsetting her, it could put her off going to school at all.
How do the staff react? do they just try to persuade her for a little while then accept her choice or do they pressure her? Maybe you could just start by seeing if she'll wear a sticker or badge thats connected with the theme and build up on successive 'theme days'. However, if she really doesn't want to, I dont think its worth upsetting her and making a big issue of it. Chances are, if she's just left alone she will decide to join in eventually. I've seen that happen.
