It is where the umbilical cord was when we were still in the womb of our mothers. It is how our moms nourish us. The minerals that our moms get when they eat is passed down to us while inside the womb and once we are born, the umbilical cord is cut and leaves what we call now as the belly button.

the belly button (navel) is where the umbilical cord attached to you from your mother before you were born. the umbilical enables the fetus to take nourishment from the mother as it grows.
when the baby is born the cord has to be cut..whats left as its healed is the belly button, which as a fully formed little human being you dont need anymore.
as far as god being involved..well he had to have a way for the baby to be fed while still in the womb..and it certainly looks better having a navel on your stomach than say...in the middle of your forehead lol!
so all in all after birth, the belly button is a "functionless depressed scar".
