Is beer considered a soft drink in your country?

Where I live, beer is considered a full fledged hard drink. The person who takes beer is considered to be someone who takes drink. That is, there is not much distinction here between beer and whisky and vodka. I believe, may be owing to movies or something else, that in countries like US, beer is considered not much different from Coke or Pepsi. Am I right or wrong? People from different parts of the world are requested to put their region's views on this here.
