Tonight we are eating submarines for supper. To americans they are called hoagies, or philadelphia cheese steak sandwiches, hero sandwiches etc.
I make mine with sauce, steak, onions, green pepper, pepperoni cheese,we read the meat and vegetables, the add sauce to the bottom of the 10 inch bun, add the ingredients, butter the sides of the bun and heat them in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
my son did all the frying, I cut up all the ingredients, he then prepared the buns and they are in the oven.
Does anyone in your family help prepare the evening meal or are you on your own?

it is very rare that someone helps me prepare a meal. On rare occasions I will let my little sister help in making something for herself. She loves it when she gets to help. But being seven I have alot of worries of her getting hurt, cut or burned so she usuing just helps with the simple things..like opening cans with a electric can opener. Or putting things into a cold oven and patting out her own hamburgers or pizza dough.

I have a niece who is 19-1/2 and burns water and even burns microwavable dinners in the microwave. So I am glad that I am teaching her a life lesson that she can use and that will prepare her for when she is older.

but that is good that you are getting her used to cooking though, she will be very comfortable with it as she gets older.

well I live alone now, so naturally I'm the only one who fixes meals....unless I can get my two kitties to fix them for me...LOL. But even before either my grandmother's or mother's passing I became the self-appointed "cook" of the home, and did so shortly before graduating college. My grandmother and mother really couldn't cook to save their lives...growing up I remember my mother relying on TV frozen dinners and if she did make things from scratch it was, uh..shall we say VERY well done...if she could have burned water she would have...LOL. I obviously inherited my great-grandmother's skills in cooking as she was THE cook of the family...it was around in college I went all out and started teaching myself French cooking..the quiches, crepes, and so forth..then moved on to oriental, Italian, and Mexican...and all homemade and from scratch...While I don't fuss as much as I used to, I'll still make things one-hundred percent homemade....no shortcuts

We have submarines here also and I love them. I also love the philly cheese steaks, delicious. Your recipe sounds great. When my daughter was home she and I used to take turns, one would cook and the other clean then she decided she would rather cook and me clean. Then my son decided he liked to cook and try different things and he does most the cooking now and I clean up afterwards. Now when it is Thanksgiving that is a different story. I do the main cooking.

Hi Winterose, When we are all at home we all help to prepare the meal and sometimes the girls herd me out of the kitchen, make me sit down and do it together themselves. Most nights though there is just myself and my young son but I encourage him to help and he enjoys it, I will let him take the leaves off of the cabbage or get him to lay the table or something so he thinks he is helping. I do all the hot, hot, hot bits though. I find he eats more if he helps pre[are and it is much more sociable. What you and you son are making for supper tonight though is making me feel really hungry, yumm. Ellie :D

In my country of origin, I used to just arrive home from work and the evening meal has been prepared. So my participation will be to wash the dishes and the thing that were used during the preparation and cooking.
Now that I am staying with my uncle, when I can, I would help him in preparing the evening meals. I am really not a good cook so I am just contented in being the assistant

Hi Winterose
That sounds delicious. I wish I could come over for dinner at your place but unfortunately I could not partake in the meal due to dietary restrictions. In answer to your question though yes, I usually prepare all my meals myself except when my son and family come over for dinner. They often bring all the ingredients for a meal in a big box and start to cook once they get here. In those cases I become the helper and follow their instructions.

We have subs here in the states, after reading what you made for dinner made me hungry. I don't cook, so my husband does most of the cooking. Now when he's gone with the military, I'm on my own and have to make dinners for the girls. They are picky eaters, so it's hard fixing something that they will eat. My husband would like for me to help out with the cooking when he's home, but honestly. I don't like taking my time, I like to get it done and over with. Cooking might be fun for others, but it feels like a chore to me.

I'm not bad at it either, it's just like a chore to me, I don't find it fun at all. I don't want to spend all day nearly preparing and cooking it. There are things that I can make better than my husband and he was chosen to cook for Bill Clinton when he was in the Navy.

That sounds good. My husband and I usually cook together, but I did all of the cooking today. I made some chicken strips and fries today and made some melted cheese to dip the chicken strips in.
I used to love to eat steak hoagies. The place where we used to live served those and they were great. They have since then, went out of business and I cannot find a good steak hoagie anywhere these days.
We have tried to make them ourselves but the good taste just isn't what we are looking for. We miss that restaurant.

I find mine are better than subways, but if you found a special place they may have had special sauce that they were using that made them so good.

Yeah. you may be right. I know they had some good cheese on theirs with some tomato also. It was yummy. I didn't know subway had steak hoagies. We have a subway around here but they do not serve them. I would love to try them if they did.

Oh, yummy!!! That sounds delicious!! My husband does all the cooking at my house. He's good, he likes to cook, so that's fine with me. I cook on occasion and am not too bad at it..I just happen to love his. :) I have to do all the cleanup, though, but that's ok too cause the meal is worth it. :) Have a great day :)

That sounds yummy, Carol.
At our house, well, no. No one helps me in the kitchen.
My son is a vegetarian, and he usually makes his own foods. Lately, he has done an awesome job of selecting his foods (spending only about $25 a week!), then cooking up a week's worth of foods and freezing them. He works hard for a few hours, then has his meals for a week all made up so all he has to do is heat them.
My hubby has tried helping out in the kitchen, but he never knows what to do. I have to tell him what to do, then tell him how to do it. (Like chopping onions, for instance.) It's easier if he amuses the dogs and cats while I cook and keeps them out of the way.

Hi winterose,
When I was single, Each one of us, My Dad, Mom, Sis and I have our own role in setting up the table and preparing the things that we need...it's always like that, when someone will say, ok let's eat, it's like a signal for everyone to grab and prepare whatever we need...LOL!
It was not agreed just the habit..Mom will prepare the rice and viand, dad for water, My sister for the plates, spoon and fork and I will prepare for the dessert..LOL!
This time, My husband and I also do the same,,,we are both in the kitchen preparing for every meal!Except weekends when he wants to do it by himself only!

My hubby and I take turns in doing the cooking and somethings we do both do it together, My middle child also loves to cook so he is always there asking if he can help you with whatever we are cooking and he really enjoys cooking so we let him help us when ever he asks and the older son wouldn't even be able to boil water he is that lazy and then the younger child is only 10 so she does help ever now and then but all she does manage to do is get in your way and it ends up take you double the time to cook tea with her around not that we really mind just cant do that every night :/

Wow your supper sounds wonderful! I have never heard of submarines or hoagies before, but I would now definately have one if it was ever offered to me.
I always do the meals on my own, but I prefer it that way, I have never cooked anything with anyone else. Plus our kitchen is very narrow so once more than one person is in there at the same time it becomes too crowded.

yes I used to have a small kitchen like that too, but I have a slightly bigger one now. And since the cutting could be done first and the frying later, only one person needs to be in the kitchen at a time.

No in our house one person does the cooking for that night and everyone else stays away from the kitchen, we have quite a small kitchen, so having more than one person in the kitchen just means we are getting under everyone elses feet, so one person does it as it is easier, quicker and less frustrating.
Last night I had chicken stir fry and my Mam made it as my Dad was fishing and I was at work, so tea was ready when we both came home at about 9:15pm.

My son is only five, but on occasion he will do little things just to feel like a big boy, he will pour the noodles into the water (im right there and make sure he doesnt get hurt), he might help get things out of the refrigerator like the milk, or cheese or what not. My hubby well he doesnt help me, either i cook or he does, we stay out of each others way..lol

sometimes it is not always practical for everyone to cook at one time.
