I just got back home to California after a 3 week road trip with my 25 year old son. One week was spent in Philadelphia, my home town, and 2 weeks were spent driving thru 13 states. It's been so long since my hitchhiking hippie days, I forgot what a mind blowing country this is. Sleeping in rest stops, going wherever the wind blows us, seeing the eagle on the wing at 12,000 feet...man...that's freedom in the purest sense of the word. We also got to a couple ballparks. A day in NYC to take in a game at Yankee stadium, a Phillies game at their new park, and a stop in Kansas City to take in a Royals game in their beautiful, but deserted Kaufmann Stadium. This was a trip that dreams are made of. There were traces of the late 60's and early 70's in some parts of the trip. Little farm towns with bored deputy sheriffs, just looking for a reason to screw with a long-haired dude with California license plates. Sitting down in a southern Indiana cafe and having to listen to youngsters talking like rednecks from "Easy Rider". It's all there...the good, bad and utterly fantastic. This trip reinforced my attitude...I love this country; I just hate the scene.

I spent the 60's living in the streets of San Francisco, panhandling in beads and jeans and bare feet. The 70's and 80's I spent carrying on a raging love affair with Hollywood. I finally left California about 25 years ago, and now I am living in the mountains of Virginia. About 10 years ago my grown kids and I took a trip back there. It's changed a lot. We spent about a year living out of our van, and then later a motor home... sleeping in rest areas, 'going wherever the wind blew us' (hehehe) all around this country looking for an ideal little town for us to relocate to. We never found it, although we did have some good adventures. I think I'm gonna try Wales, although my son's vote is China. You're right as far as I'm concerned... the scene in this country has become very unfun. I don't like it here anymore. I love your line "the good, bad, and utterly fantastic" though! Great line!

PS: Your kitty story was very funny too. I got a good laugh over your 'frog on speed' line! No way I am going to respond over there though since I got totally ignored by the poster. I've got mars in scorpio, what else can I say?

Welcome back! There really is no place like home. I am glad that you had a good time. It was hot, there were heat waves all through July! It is a big country.
