I just finished reading the bible for the first time in my life... wow

i dint think it would be like this.. its almost as if someone made a story from a bunch of random life rules. literally, its a story that preaches rule after rule. and its not like the rules have anything to do with anything, they are completly random. a modern day book on morals would provide evidence for what it deems moral or immoral.. the bible just tells you. for example, theft is wrong, because if everyone did it, it would be illogical to steal... partly because the item would once again be stolen. i find it wierd that people 'believe' or 'have faith' in this book. by no means does it seem holy in anyway... also, it was a pretty hard read.. partly because of its randomness.. but also because there was no real literal flow from one topic to the next.. it was kind of like a 'blog' - like the one im typing now. i find it hard to believe that anyone would take this story literally.. btw, i havent even read the old test. yet... and since the new test. was such a waste of time, i dont think i will be reading the old one... i did not learn anything: time and time again christians told me to read it before i crit. it and not just take out specific points in arguments. im done debating religion.. its cuz religious people do not use logic to back up their points, they use faith... it took me a while for me to realize this.. partly because, ironicly, its so illogical to have faith over logic. anyways.. thats it.. what a weird world we live in.. its hard to believe that this is the best 'selling' book ever.. hmm, why not a good book like atlas shrugged?

It's always interesting to keep track of the rules, and then note which rules contradict later rules. You can find a fair few without even looking at some of the outdated craziness in the Old Testament, but that's where it really excels. Deuteronomy and Leviticus are good if you want some exceptional far fetched. For example, I'm pretty sure I can't attend church anyhow, for I'm reasonably sure I've been kicked in the balls at least once in my lifetime. No, really. Deuteronomy 23:1 - He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD. Personally, if I'd had my privy member cut off, I'd be looking for a little more sympathy then they're offering here.

One must have faith to understand the Bible. The truth of the Bible are spiritually discerned and without faith it is impossible to please God. However, taking the Bible by faith, it is the most logical book in the world. It's easy to criticize something one doesn't understand.

Correct, faith isn't logic but logic tells us nothing about the world. Logic only tells us about the validity of an argument. Nor is logic sufficient to understand a text, since,if for no other reason, all text stands in need of interpretation all the best urban

You're absolutely right, urban. People occasionally discuss phenomena that "defy logic." How does logic explain something like prevision? It doesn't. You could call it "coincidence," but not when it just keeps on happening. That's access to knowledge of the future, point-blank. When you intercede for someone who lives 3,000 miles away, and watch through your MySpace e-mail as their life undergoes a complete metamorphosis, step by step by step in under two weeks, it appears to be long-range, influential power at the very least (even more so when it involves one friend and four strangers). When you find yourself in the position to help someone the day after they stick it to you, and then again, it appears to be destiny if not karma. A person who is thoroughly unwilling to acknowledge a Higher Power will either plug their ears and run, or flat-out dismiss this entire lot as nothing but lies. And since it's kind of hard to prove something like this, it's easy enough for one to brush off. But when you see it for yourself, as I have, nothing and nobody can ever again take it away from you.

You may have read it but I think you failed to see the picture. There are actually no rules set on the New Testament. Better check it out again, this time, try to use semantic approaches. Context clues... etc... We won't believe in something funny as well. Anyway, it's a shame for Christians not to read the Bible in its entirety because you, a skeptic of it, claimed to have read the entire NT.

I tend to agree, which is why I don't swear by the Bible, and don't call myself a Christian. I lean toward monotheism, but am essentially a pantheist because I can't fit a "who" into the puzzle; all I have is a "what," which is intelligent intervention. I try not to jump to conclusions; logic and experience are all I have.

I find it rather interesting that you are ranked so high in the religion interest and you have never even read the literature that a great number of folks base their faith on. You really should read the Tanach. It is nothing like the christian testament. It even has dirty stories in it that might appeal to you. Even though people will try to tell you that christianity and Islam and Judaism are similar religions because they sprang from the same person thus have the same roots, they evolved diametrically. You should have some background information if you are going to write on a subject intelligently. You should also read the Quaran. They have some fairly concise translations out now. That is how I feel. People don't question it...my mom did years ago and the preist so it doesn't matter because we don't use that part of the bible! So then she just became a JW which I don't understand either.

Faith is the beliefe in things that cannot be seen. I am a Christian and find it heartreaking that you can read the Bible and not be moved in the slightest by it. Of course if you read it with a closed mind and hard heart it will not reveal its truths to you. God Bless you anyway.

Hello! It's been a long time! Well I am having a hard time here understanding how you just finished reading the Bible, but you seemed to have things confused. You said it was just rule after rule, but you did not read the OT. Well, the NT is about the life of Jesus, not really the rules. The "rules" part is mainly in the OT. So which part did you read? I reckon until you can pick that Bible up and read it because you want to and NOT to just find info for a debate, you won't understand why it's a best seller. Not trying to be a jerk, just saying. I personally never could read the Bible till the day came I wanted to. Then when I did, it was really interesting to me. It's kind of like Algebra, not only did I not get it, but couldn't understand why anyone would want use it. That was till the day came I wanted to learn it. Now it makes sense and I understand why it's used.

I believe each people have different opinions on the bible. When I was young I used to read it but I never ever came up to finish it. I like the book of psalms though. Like others I am as well sometimes in question about it. Is it real? who wrote it? How can someone know when God created the earth and the universe when no one was even in here that time? Is it written by God? This are just some of my many questions but still I believe. The bible may be questionable but I still believe this supreme being is out there watching over us. Never again have I read the bible or tried to finish what I have started to read but my faith in him will always be there.

Ok here is my challenge to you; give me one moral rule with a full rationale, since you claim that can now be done. The bible is not an easy read, I would suggest you start with something easier. I believe there is a splendid series of books featuring Janet and John all the best urban

dude i like to know something from you....... what was your perception or motive before reading bible ????
@urbandekay (18278)

It is clear your motive is not to understand but to mock. This is bad practice philosophically speaking. There is a convention, in philosophical circles called, philosophical charity. You should, if you wish to criticise something, first put the best and strongest interpretation on it. Keep on tilting at windmills and staw-men if it amuses you but it accomplishes nought. all the best urban

I thought there was a glimmer of hope that there was a higher power that would answer prayers and help people. Since that book was written by a man about a man made god, there was no truth or basis for it other than to scare humans to be good. My grandpa made me read it because everyone in our town was "religious" at least for the hour of church every Sunday.

^_^ oh! really.. you didn't read it well.. or your understanding is not that good.. you said.. you have just finished reading the bible.. but did not read OT.. questionable.. have you really read all NT??? or just saying that to critic the Bible in your own idea without really reading and understanding it.. if it is not facts... then all Archaeologists are misguided.. cause they are guided by the bible to find this place and that.. and the one that they discovered is a toy.. and the History that was taught to us was a lie.. then science is a fact.. but my question is.. if there is a beginning.. then how can a scientist--- a human.. know about this?? im a human too.. did this human live many years ago??? maybe he/she is an alien.. where did he/she base this things??? is this thing really accurate???

I read the whole thing once too. The Old Testament was a good laugh with Noah and Adam and Eve talking to a snake. God was responsible for many wars and has killed millions according to the bible. Wars are still started because of religion. I had to read it to confirm my beliefs of non-believing. Its a good joke book that cant be taken seriously.
