As puppies, retrievers are very hard to handle, and they stay playful for a long time. They need to keep their minds busy. Starting out on the right foot with training and such is so important. If you want to eliminate this, adopt an older dog. I love dogs, and have had many puppies, but when I got married this time, we rescued an older dog, she was already potty trained and knew basic commands, and I haven't regretted a minute of it. I don't know how I would have had the time with three kids to train a retriever pup.

hi joan....golden retrievers are a challenge and are not for everyone. they are playful like a puppy almost their whole lives. they need careful training. they are sensitive so they need a clear, gentle but firm training. most people are not capable of this so it is best they use a trainer or club. they need regular training. hope you can work something out.
