A while ago, I was watching this cartoon - Atashinchi(Japanese cartoon dubbed with my country's language). So anyway, today's episode is about a classmate of one of the main character. They find this classmate weird. Another classmate found out that there is an insect in their food for lunch. Their teacher told them not to eat the food. But the weird classmate didnt care and eat it. At the end of the episode one classmate asked the main character. Is their weird classmate really weird or just unique?
I was not able to answer such question and I'm still trying my best to think of the answer but unfortunately I couldnt. What about you my fellow mylotters, what is the difference?

I've been called "uniquely weird" once??? I guess there's a normal way of being weird? To me, weird isn't nessaceraly a bad thing... Have you ever done something & when the out come was completely different than what you expected, you say to yourself, "That's weird! It shouldn't be this way!"? Weird to me is something I don't understand or something unexpected, not nessaceraly in bad way either... Something I've never seen before or situation I've never been in before, "weird" is what I would use to describe it... Unique means something different, something original... Making a change in something just enough to make it different than everything else around it...

Unfortunately, in modern times, the word "unique" has taken on a different meaning than it originally had. Originally, it was used to describe something that was the only one of its kind. By this definition, every person on the Earth is unique; there is no one else like you. However, now "unique" seems to mean something that's kind of different from everything else, making it stand out. This toning down of the definition has led to the development of the phrase "very unique." Truly, the word "unique" cannot be modified, because how can something be more one-of-a-kind than it already is? The point, of course, is that "unique" these days means very different, standing out from the crowd, or strikingly dissimilar.
"Weird" has undergone a similar change, though it has been more gradual. "Weird" used to refer to something incredibly repulsive or monstrous, but it's been toned down as well, and now just means something strange that confuses or excites someone. It can still be repulsive though, and usually carries a negative connotation.
As for the comparison question... I'd guess the usage of "unique" there was an attempt to show some type of acceptance of the classmate's behavior. Calling him "weird" sounds like an insult. Calling him "unique" still labels him as someone that stands out, but it softens the blow a bit, and may go so far as to make it a point of pride for the "weird classmate."

weird is strange . it is not accepted by the general society. what scientists do is weird. what film stars do is weird. they do the off beat things. but once the scientist has his theorem or principle proved or the star gets a huge hit, this very weird thing turns to unique. people start following it saying it is unique. i hope you got me.

Weird has a note of undesirability while unique is more collectable or something you would want.
