What was the Guano Islands Act?In the 1800s, bird droppings were valued as fertilizer. As a result,, a U.S. law called the Guano Islands Act, passed on August 18, 1856, stated that if you're a U.S. citizen and come across a guano deposit on a rock, island, or key that doesn't belong to any country, you can claim it for the United States.:)
