Does your kid put real meaning to being a couch potato? It's time to get moving.Childhood obesity rates getting higher these days.Don't let your child glue themselves to the computer screen, this wastes energy and precious daylight.Encourage kids to go outside and show them exercise can be fun!
Make your child exercise five days a week, for thirty minutes each and they'll thank you later.Encourage them to walk the dog and join them.Your child needs healthy heart and a well balanced life.Start teaching your kids the joys of fruits and veggies when they are babies, they will carry this into adulthood.Kids mimic what they see,if they see a lazy parent that snacks on junk, they are going to be more likely to do that too.
Are you a coach potato?

I was Very hyper when I was younger. After I had both my sons I was not so hyperactive anymore. I wish I could get half that energy back today! I would have all my work done in No time! LOL
When my boys were young I would always tell them that they needed to go outside and play, and they would get a group of their friends and play football or baseball. But if they could not get a large group together they would want to come back in and play video games. Now I wish that we would have never bought them that video game. Even now as adults they are still playing them..

Right you are! Exercise is fun! Morning sunshine gives Vitamin D so children and adults too should enjoy the nature instead of becoming a couch potato. I'm sad for kids who are left alone by parents on whatever they want to do with their lives, just playing at the computer, or watching tv eating junks all day. My goodness, these lazy parents are raising children who would die before their time. Well I am not like that. I exercise a lot and my family too! We rise up early and go jogging altogether and it is such a big fun and more than anything it makes us healthy and alert all day.

Im not a couch potato, but I love to sit and relax!!but I do combine this sitting with a fair amount of getting upand down and in and outting of the garden, then I do a fair bit in my mothers garden too.So I dont think im too inactive!!I saw a fridge magnet this afternoon,in the shop at the Garden centre, and it had a little fat panda on it,and it was saying that all she needed was a longer pair of legs, well thats the same as me!!Or if I could be placed in a grow bag, filled with the finest fertiliser, and stuck in it for a couple of weeks until I grew a few inches, well that wold be wonderful!!but I think both hubby and I both do our fair share of house work and outdoors work,it just is maybe that we eat a little bit too much Cadburys dairy milk.

I'm not a couch potato and i'm not going to let my kid be one either. I think kids need more fresh air than watching TV all the time at home. I take my baby girl out for sunshine and trees since she was a month old lol. And she loves it.

I believe PC do harm to kids a lot. They are not rational enough to resist the attaction of net. They may addict to video game or other meanless activities. I ever saw a mother search from one net bar to another for her kid. The net bar boss said that the kid had been ruined even though his mother find her.

Well, this is a very good statement/question. I think that you put up a good point and children SHOULD get more exercise. However, with today's modern life style kids are choosing to go the easier/lazier way. Such as just sitting down and playing video games, chatting on the internet, just "hanging" at the mall. I also believe that parents are not contributing in a positive manner to this issue as well cause they are busy with work and such things. People should take some time out of their busy schedules to just workout/exercise for 30 minutes everyday to maintain their healthy and physique. The government should open more community centers and YMCA's with lower costs so all levels (financial wise) can enjoy and benefit from such things.
P.S. I am not a couch potato. I am proud to say that I am a strong volley ball player and gymnist. Everyone get off the computers and go have some exercise!

Hi roshand,
I agree with you.. Kids environment is a great factor for their lifestyle too! I have no kids but when I was growing up, My parents have a farm and we need to help them as well as fetch water to water the plants since it has no irrigation!
Then during the harvest, we have to eat the corn, different vegetable and other stuff so I can say, that those orientation contributed a lot to my whole personality!
yet this time, we can see really a lot of kids who are not enjoying outdoor because of different toys and video games that they can play, it's good to have our kids inside the house but at the same time, not very healthy too!

No, I'm not a couch potato, and I've encouraged my kids not to be either. When they get older they will have to decide on their own, but now that they're young I can have some control. We don't have cable TV in our house. That doesn't mean that the kids don't watch shows or videos. It means that we either rent or borrow videos from the library. This way they get to see some entertainment without being exposed to commercials. It has had a positive affect. What they consider 'treats' are far more healthy thatn the average child. They consider getting real fruit juice and fruit a treat and they don't really push for sugary treats or pop.
As for the computer. I didn't give access to my kids until they were about 4 or 5. Then, I only let them play educational video games and for a short period of time. I never just leave them for long periods of time at the computer by themselves.
All this has paid off so far. When they are given the choice of going to play outside or watching Tv or playing a computer game, they often choose to go outside. This can change when they get older and become more independant, but layong a good foundation when they are young can help them make better decisions later.

I am proud to say I'm not a couch potato. I lead a very active lifestyle and both my husband and I enjoy working out at least 3 days a week. My kids although fans of computers like everyone else, will only play around on the computer for about an hour before they get "bored" and want to do something. For them, its Taekwondo and Basketball. They are active in both sports and enjoy participating in most any other sport as well. Kids are active by nature and its as they grow that these lazy habits start to take root. In my daughter's middle school they even have P.E. courses as electives and optional. I think they should be required like reading and math as promoting healthy habits helps them accomplish other goals as well. Good post, good message!

No I am not a couch potato by nature. I feel there is always something I could be doing instead of laying around in front of the television. I have a four year old son who I try to occupy with other things. I think you are right, children are becoming obese in this country due to to much lounging around and television.
