Replying to a discussion earlier made me think just how nomadic many people on myLot are. Many have lived in different countries, or moved extensively about their own country. Despite having done a huge amount of traveling, I have lived in only two different countries and three English counties. How many countries, States or counties have you lived in. Where were/are they and which one would you like to be in permanently?

I've only lived in the USA and in 3 states, although one state I don't remember living in. If I had my preferences, I would live in Oregon to be nearer to family. And I like the fact that Oregon doesn't have too many catastrophes related to weather! No hurricanes, no earthquakes, etc.

I have been up and down the length and breadth of the coutry lol my parents were in private service,so we moved as and when they changed their jobs.I can clearly remember my sister and I used to dread it!!and the thought of the darn Pickfords van turning up again!but the biggest drawback was the constant disruption to our education, each move brought yet another school. But we spent thrty plus years of our life in Wiltshire and then we moved to be near to Mum,in Derbyshire, and I cant foresee myself going anywhere else!

Not much anymore. I have settled here in Canada although it certainly wouldn't have been my first choice. But while I was growing up I lived in many different countries some because they were my parent's birth country and many due to my dad's job.
My dad is from Angola and I lived there for quite some years. I love it and it would be one of my choices if things were better there. MY mom is from Brazil, another lovely choice climate wise, but maybe not as good economically although it's getting better.
I also lived in other countries like France, Belgium, Spain and even Morocco for a short time.
ALthough Canada was so much down on my list of places to live in, that's where I ended and I guess the deal now is to make the most of it :)

Personally I think I would prefer Angola over even Brazil. I lived just across from the bay in Luanda and it was the most wonderful place in the world :)
As for Canada, you are right, of course, I can think of many, many worse places to live. But after living in nice and warm places, going to sleep with the sound of the waves gently kissing the sand like a lulaby.... I miss that, who wouldn't
That said, I know there are places where I lived before that I think I wouldn't get used that easily now that I've been here. I am getting older. I want good health care, I want polite drivers, I want to walk in the sidewalk without having to go into the street to avoid the cars that are parked on the sidewalk.
Since my problem is more a climate and geographical thing ( the being right by the ocean thing ) than anything else, maybe one day we will be able to compromise and move from Toronto to Vancouver - if only the prices there weren't so high we would probably be there already :)

I have only lived in one country, USA. I have lived in 2 states, Texas and Pennsylvania. In Texas, I lived in 8 different cities/towns which were located in 6 different counties. I have lived in two towns in Pennsylvania, in the past 3 1/2 years. We have lived in our current house for a little over 2 years. As to which one I would like to be in permanently....that's a hard one. I have liked each place I have lived, for different reasons. However, if something were to happen (God fobid) to my s/o, then I would probably end up moving back down south, since that is where all my family is living. As for now, as long as we are together doesn't really matter where I live. By the way, we are looking at moving sometime next year! He is taking early retirement and we are looking for a home to buy, just not sure where yet.

Thank you. We are already looking, to see what is available and the prices, etc. We're hoping to get something with a little land or at the least a bigger yard for our dog. If it came down to it.......I'll always be a Texan! lol You can take the girl outta Texas but ya can't take Texas outta the girl lol

Well, I was born in India (mom came to her mother's for the the delivery). 2 months after I was born, I was taken to Bahrain where I was till the age of two. My parents then moved to Kuwait....where I spent most parts of my childhood. For a few years in between, we moved back to a state called Kerala in India. And then we went back to Kuwait again. We moved back to Kerala during the Gulf invasion and my father returned to Kuwait in a year and my mother and sister followed him in another year...while I continued my education in another state of India, Karnataka (in a place called Hubli). I then went back to Kuwait for work and returned to Kerala after my sister finished high school. I was married soon after and moved to Bangalore(the capital of Karnataka) and have been here since then.
But I have visited many other countries and states of India.

Karnataka and Kerala are in South India (neighbouring states). And India is quite a big country compared to the UK.
The country is so diverse that even Karnataka and Kerala are very different. So, if ever you happen to visit Kerala....you would find it to be VERY different from the north border that you visited.
Each state has different languages....and different dialects in each language.

I lived first in Scotland, then moved to Suffolk, Kent in England and then we moved to Halifax in Canada, stayed in North Vancouver, (I was three years old at the time) then on to Vancouver, lived in British Columbia, got married, moved to Saskatchewan and then to Winnipeg. So those were the places I lived at. I did visit the States before and after I married. I liked the States especially Maine. I love to be near the sea, but if my husband went to the States, he would like to be in Iowa. So we do have a problem. I like it here in Winnipeg, but only because I am close to my friends. It is fine in summer but a bit too cold in winter for me.

So you have British Blood then Suspenseful. My FIL was born in Saskatoon and he came here! I like the idea of living in Maine too. The coastline is so appealing. I wouldn't want to live too far from the sea ever. We are a 30 minute drive from iy here and that's far enough for me.

I was born and raised in New Zealand and lived their most of my life until we moved to Samoa in 2000. Lived there for 6 years before we moved to the USA. I'm hoping we get to move back to NZ (my family and his are there) but my husband doesn't want to so we shall see. Who knows where our next venture will take us. If it's here then that is fine too as my son and I are enjoying living in Virginia. If not, then I hope it's somewhere tropical or closer to NZ.

I have always lived in England, and I have lived in, 5 counties in my thirty five years I think. I have lived in Swindon, and I have lived in three places in Manchester and then where I currently am now. Out of all, I do not know which I would prefer to live in. None of them I would say, I would move to another place instead.

hi pikefishey dear I was born in south Dakota, moved to Arizona when I was 30, met my husband to be when I was 31, and he was from Washington State. we married.lived in Tempe Arizona til my son was almost four then moved to California. We have since been in three houses, then in numerous apartments but always here in
Southern California. Now I dont know just what the heck is going to happen, I am so upset. my son had not yet got a new job, because his ex boss gave the unemploymeent insurance people a vicious report, he was denied unemployment benefits so now we are here day 7 of the month and rent due on the 3rd, and no rent payment. He is still really looking for a job in computer programming as that is what he is experienced in. so hope he finds one very son. this is really stressing me out.pray for me please. thanks much. sorry to rant like this.

You have my prayers gladly. It is not fair that you should be stressed this way. In the UK you would receive a pension; does that not happen in the US. You'd also receive Housing Benefit from the state to help pay your rent. Is the apartment yours or your son's? I do so hope that he can find something soon. Maybe he will have to look at jobs other than computing temporarily. If you are his dependent does that not qualify him with the Unemployment people at all? I don't know if any of the organisations here can help: www.at-la.com/cities/tustin/charitable.htm or the City Council of course. Take care Hatley.

My dad was in the RAF so have lived in many places, I'll try and name them.
Born in Surrey, then to Germany, Shawbury (Shropshire), St Eval (Cornwall), my parents went to Germany(again) and we were sent to boarding house. Mine was in Loughborough (Leicestershire). it now gets complicated as my parents now spilt up, mum moved to Carlton (Nottingham) when dad back to England he moved to St Ives (Cambridgeshire), mum then moved to Cotgrave (Nottingham) I moved in with mum here, dad moved onto the RAF base Wyton (Cambridgeshire) and then later to Huntingdon (Cambrigeshire), I then went to Butlins (Skegness), dad spent his time between Huntingdon and Luton. after marrying he lived in Luton but still had his house, then he sold it and then moved to Shetland Island where he is at the moment. My mum again moved to another part of Nottingham while I moved to Yorkshire!!
Hope this answers your question as this is pretty much my live history, I have just left my brothers out but that just makes it even more complicated!!

Its a very small world!! The places I enjoyed most were Cornwall and Germany. I cant really remember being at Shawbury, I remember certain things but not much!!
I do want to go out to Shetland Island to see my dad but also to explore the Island!!
My boarding house was for the Forces aswell. During half term we would visit my grandparents who lived in Nottingham and for the big hols we would fly to Germany or split the hols between both parents!!

Hmmm ... I was born in Leeds, UK and moved to Australia when I was about 6. To Darwin - the hottest, most tropical city. We stayed there for about 10 years before moving to Canberra - (the coldest-wintered most un-tropical city!) Couldn't wait to get outta there, so married someone who lived on the south coast. (No, I didn't choose him entirely on a Location Location criterion ...) I haven't been very nomadic for the past 30 years, I must admit. We bought a house and have been here ever since - but, hooray for retirement soon ... we're going to Darwin - almost full circle! (Maybe I'll get them to send my ashes to Leeds ... *sigh*)

I know - we must be a bit mad! Our daughter was posted there with the Air Force a few years ago, so my husband and I went to visit her. He fell in love with the place, and we've been back a few times since. Each time, he's more and more convinced he wants to retire there. Our daughter lives right on a marina, where it's cool and breezy - much nicer than the outer suburbs. It's changed a lot since I was growing up there. When our kids were younger, we always took them to Mooloolaba for holidays, and I really loved it there - it would have been our retirement place of choice if the old lad hadn't discovered Darwin ...

We loved Mooloolaba - in fact, every year we'd take the kids to the aquarium at the Wharf and take their pics on the back of Old Leatherback (the big stuffed turtle out the front!) Even now I love looking at the pics, with the kids getting bigger and bigger every year. Nice memories. Maybe one day the old lad will get tired of Darwin and we'll mosey on down there ... you never know. Another of our daughters is in Brisbane at the moment (she moved from Upper Coomera last year) - so we're scattered all over the country!

I've only been out of MN 3 times in my life... boring I know, I went to Ontario, Canada which is not very far and also to WI and ND. But I will be going to Reno Nevada for a seminar this fall and I really really look forward to it! I'd definately STAY in MN, if I was to move away, I'd like to live in WI. It's so beautiful there... even just to drive thru... the glaciers did wonderful things to that state!

Well, when I was younger we traveled alot and I didn't really like it much. But I did love being able to go swimming on Christmas day in Arizona with 95 degree weather. I would love to live near a beach so that I could go swimming everyday I love the water..

Yeah we have a bunch of lakes around where I live some within 30 miles of me. But lakes are totally different then beaches with their warm sands and cleaner waters..We have one beach that is in the next county over it is called Lawrence county beach and I loved going there for a swim the water was just great. But it cost so much a hour/day to go. My sister had a party there last year and it cost her $200 to rent it for 2 hours. I would love to get to go back but not having a car and all and it's to far to ride a bike or walk. You have to watch some lakes because you never know whose sewer might be in there.

When I was a baby, my parents moved at LEAST once maybe more in NJ. However, since I've been in Texas my permanate address has always been in Austin. I have, however, gone to college in Bell County, Hays County and Denton County. The towns would be Killeen, San Marcos and Denton. Only Killeen was not the county seat, as Austin, San Marcos and Denton are the county seats of their counties.

LOL, But I wasn't really "living" there, just going to school.
Hey, if I had gone down one more county I could've been in New Braunfuls, home of an annual Wurstfest and of the most famous water park in the world (so I'm told) Schlitterbahn WaterPark Resort.
Yes, it was settled by German immigrants. My allergiest was located in Fredericksburg until his retirement - well, he's probably still in the area....

Hello there p1kef1sh!
I still live in my birthplace. Though I have lived in different places when I was younger, my family decided to stay here for good. I have traveled a lot but all of which are just for pleasure. I have intentions of going abroad (United Kingdom) to further my studies in business and hope to stay in that country for a while even after I finish my course. If ever, I would like to live in Ireland or in Spain or in Australia and stay there for good. Who knows?

Unlike a lot of people on myLot, I was born, raised and still live in New York State. However, when I was 14 years old my parents traveled cross-country by car and we saw and visited a lot of states within the United States. But I have never actually lived in any other state and country except New York and the United States of America. Also unfortunately I have never traveled to or visited any country outside of the U.S., although I would love to visit Italy, France, Spain and Germany, where my ancestors came from 100 years ago.

All it takes is a trip down to the airport. LOL. There is an assumption these days that if you don't want to travel then you must be a brain cell or two adrift. This is of course nonsense. If you are happy where you are then there's no need to move an inch. Thank you.

Of course I know all it takes is a trip down to the airport! That would be easy enough for my husband and I to drive right on down there because we live near JFK Airport in New York City. But a trip down to the airport -- close or not -- also requires MONEY to get on an airplane. I am very happy living in Queens, New York but cannot afford the price of an airline ticket nowadays, especially that now they are charging $15 for carry-on bags! The last time my husband and I took a trip within the U.S. in the state of Florida, we did NOT have to pay extra for our carry-on bags or anything else for that matter. Times have changed and not for the better.

I've lived in the USA all my life. I have lived in 3 different states when my husband was in the Air Force. But we now live in our home state where we were born. I have only lived in two different counties here. When we decided to build a home, we bought land from my husband's Dad which is in a county where I had never lived before. I suppose you could say we are here permanently since we have lived here for over 38 years.

I'm from a small town about 25 minutes from here. Most of my people are close except for my daughter and her children. Her second husband moved her off over an hour away and she's stayed there although she was divorced over 8 years ago. There is so many things that make us stay here. I come from a family as does my husband that are known for living in the same place all their married lives. We can't claim that but we have been here since my son was 22 months old.
