Rat Terrier Problems

I have a wonderful Rat Terrier. She is almost two years old and is just the best compainion. I talk to her, and although it sounds weird I think she knows what I am saying. Anyway...I have a bit of a problem with her and I have tried everything. She is constantly jumping...and she can just almost up to my shoulders. I have tried everything I can think of to curb her jumping, but she just can't seem to help herself when she is excited. Does anyone have any ideas that could help me out?

You must walk the dog. If you walk it now then walk it 2 times as much. See if that helps. Most trainers will tell you to walk the dog. You should also set rules, boundaries and limitations on the dog. But walking it should help the most. They are very active dogs and if you are not active enough for them then they will have stored energy waiting to be released.

I already walk my dog (with a back-pack) for an hour a day. I have to work, and don't have the time to be walking her for 2 hours a day. Not to mention, she is tired after the hour walk. My real issue with her, is the jumping when she is excited. I know that it is something to work on, and probably something she will always do, but I was just looking to see if anyone had any new ideas. She does have ruls, boundaries and limitations.

I've seen the dog whisperer do wonders walking a problem dog and then establishing rules, boundaries and limitations. One of the rules would be not to jump. So create the rule.

Rat Terriers are, by nature, somewhat hyperactive. Like Jack Russel Terriers, they do like to jump a lot. Jack Russels outgrow this in about 7 years. Until then they are just really bouncy. I am not sure if Rat Terriers ever outgrow it. You can try holding your hand out, palm down, and firmly saying "NO" every time she does it. Sometimes that will work if it is repeated enough times as a training aid. But not always. Good luck.

I never could find a good solution for that one. I used to have a rat terrier and she also was a jumper. I think it is just part of their personality, for whatever reason, they seem to love to jump. She used to jump up on my computer desk and lay there, unless I was working at my computer.
