so I am going to make a breakfast casserole, as it keeps well and re heats in the microwave. I have to go get some more eggs, though, so that I have enough for that and a few other things. Do you cook based on what is on sale? Do you make an extra trip, even with the cost of gas? By the way, I am going to the store that will give me 5 cents for bringing my own bags, for each bag I use, and I am earning credits toward a coupon for ten cents off per gallon of gasoline. Do any of your stores reward you in any way?

The store i shop at the most is called Co-op and you buy a 10 dollar lifetime membership (basically own shares in the store) and every December based off your purchases you get money back. Last year i got a hundred dollars back...not sure what i spent but it was nice to get right before Christmas.

That sounds great. I would love it if my stores did that.

It is good to see that eggs are finally coming back down in price. We bought five dozen because they were almost half price as to what they were three months ago. We are always buying what is on sale and stock up. We were buying groceries at Safeway because they offer the gas discount if you buy $50 dollars of groceries from them. But we only buy what is on sale there and do most of our shopping at a warehouse type stire

We have to spend a $100 to get the ten cents off. We can use the loyalty card and get two cents off at the co operating station any time.

We used to do that.
Then sometime this past year, I developed
a regular menu and now pretty much just follow that.
We have very simple meals, consisting of one piece
of meat, lots of cooked veggies, one potato and a piece
of bread.
I used to do lots of casserole style dishes.
Not so much anymore.
Most of the cooking is done on my Foreman grill
and in the microwave. So it's a real time and money
saver.

That sounds good a breakfast casserole. I don't think I have ever made anything like that. I would take advantage of that sale on eggs. It would be worth the trip I believe. There have been some supermarkets I would go to that had the special earnings and rewards when I lived up north. I have been in Alabama for a little while now and haven't gotten around to getting any bonus cards yet if there are any.

The cards and bonuses on gasoline and discounts for bags are at a store in the Kroger family. I am not sure what they are called in the south, if there are any. Gerbes, Kings, Dillons.

What is a breakfast casserole? I cook according to what is on sale as it helps to save money, and at the moment a lot of them have fruit and vegetables on sale so it helps me to eat healthily! there is a few supermarkets here that reward you for spending with money, usually you get points that you can redeem for money off fuel or groceries! Happy mylotting! xx

Usually a breakfast casserole has meat, eggs, cheese, veggies, potatoes, or bread all cooked together in a baking dish in the oven. I like the kind that I can cut into squares and reheat.

Lucky you! Our eggs are still the same price, I don't think they've lowered them at all. (Gee, I really do miss my laying chickens!!) I do cook based on what's on sale, and whether it's in season (making it cheaper as well as fresher.) When there's a good sale, I usually stock up, and if it's freezable I get a few meals extra worth and pop it into the freezer. I don't make extra trips, I try and consolidate my trips so that I don't have to waste gasoline, or energy and time. Most of the stores I go to don't have any kind of reward program. The only ones that do around here are CVS pharmacy, and Giant Eagle grocery stores. That's nice that your store gives you 5 cents for bringing your own bags. That makes a lot of sense, and probably a lot less waste at the garbage dump. I wish more stores would do that!

I try and buy bulk when there is stuff on special. I have to be careful with my shopping because I'm 45 minutes away from the closest shops. I try and do a big shop regularly but I always run out of fresh veges and bread. I try to use frozen veges but I still run out of bread. I don't have enough room in my freezer to buy up bulk quantities of bread.
What does your breakfast casserole consist of? Eggs are pretty much a staple here and are rarely, if ever, on sale. They are pretty cheap considering. Now if zuchinis are on sale I will make zuchini slice...takes about 5 eggs. It's yummy

Yes, I have always cooked based on what is for sale or growing at the particular time of year. We use the rewards cards at several kinds of stores, but the store near us that has the gas discounts printed on the register receipts does not have gas pumps except in a neighboring town, and even there, the place we normally get gas charges less than they do even after the discount.
We love eggs, and when they are on sale we buy in quantity and have lots of different kinds of egg dishes--spinach souffle (which I make up in individual servings and freeze, deviled eggs, egg salad, custard or flan, you name it. In fact, today I baked a couple eggs together with a T-Bone steak and hash browns for breakfast. Neither of us likes to eat a whole steak all at once so usually we split one.

Lol, next time you are in the grocery store, check out the ingredients list on Stouffer's yummy frozen spinach souffle! That is where I got the idea of making my own. Took me 4 or 5 tries to get mine tasting just like the store bought stuff, but that is because I leave the sugar out. They salt it too much too, and of course I use sea salt.

Hi Gerty,
Up North we have a Safeway that rewards you with discounts on food and gas at the pump. It makes it worthwhile to shop there. Also it is within a mile from my house. Nice place for a quick trip.
Your egg casserole sounds like a good idea, and something I would like to try. Could you PM it to me? I'm always looking for something to make that can be re-heated and frozen for a second meal. Thanks.
Have a nice day..

Yes I do cook based on what is on sale it is usually short and sweet though because I dont care for cooking I get alot of those one skillet dinners that have everything you need and add a couple of bisquits to make it a meal. I dont do extra trips. My husband raises chicken so we always have plenty of eggs. We dont have stores that give rewards wish we did. You have a great night.

With your own chickens you have the very best eggs. I told my husband that egg yolks are not even yellow any more, not like they used to be.

Sounds good! But I have never done it because I am lazy enough. In fact in our country all the price is going up and some measures must be taken.Maybe someday I have to consider your idea to save money.

I don't think I'd make a special journey to buy something on sale as I'm a fair distance from the shops, but I'd certainly stock up on a good deal if I saw one. When I had a freezer I would always have it full of special offers and I currently try and time my buying of 'loss leader' essential for when they are on sale and buy enough to last me until they come around again.
5c for taking your own bag is a good incentive. Around here the only incentive for taking your own is that the supermarket charges you for them. Anything that encourages people to reuse them has to be a good thing though, and I keep some in my car.
I have a reward card for my local supermarket, but I need to change it to the local branch as I've moved. I can still use it on their cheap deals, but I need to have it held locally to be able to qualify for cheap fuel vouchers.

The 2 major supermarkets give a docket for 4c off a litre of fuel when you spend over $30. The problem is that they put the price of fuel up first, then all the other servos match their price so, in essence, these 2 supermarkets are controlling the price of fuel in our country. It's such a rip-off especially with the increases in fuel.

During the period of Olympic Games, the price of food have a really high rate. The eggs now is 3.8RMB which is only 3.00 in the past months. Too bad

We live too far from stores to make an extra trip to get things to cook. I buy my groceries usually once a week and buy only those things I need. I don't look for sales on groceries, although any would be appreciated. You hardly ever find food on sale. I do buy from a store that gives you stamps toward dishes, but I don't use them, since that is not my primary grocery store.
