Does God talk to you?

Do you believe God speaks to you, whether overtly or in a different manner? Through the Bible, through other people, etc? This post is intended for those who believe in God, any God, but I welcome the respectful insight of others.

yes he does he talks to all of us but not everyone takes the time to listen to him and it`s important to talk to him as often as possible

How do you know it's God speaking and not just your own thoughts?

Yes, listening is key to hearing Him. I tried to find the little details that he places in my path to lead me.

Yes, God speaks to me. We couldn't have a relationship if there was no communication. He doesn't speak to me audibly.. it's kind of hard to explain, I guess. But I pray to him and he answers me. He guides me whole life. What do you think?

I totally agree. I take advantage of little details in life that come at a time when I need an answer. And sometimes, I think there is a little voice. I guess it would be my conscience, but sometimes I think maybe God is that voice.

God has given us incredible freedom in our lives. He won't force the relationship. If you want Him to be a bigger part of your life, all you need to do is ask Him. I pray for guidance a lot and for Him to steer my life, and He has definately answered my prayer. By the way, it keeps making me double post for some reason.. I sent them an e-mail about it. Sorry!

I believe god is present in every living being. Whoever does anything good to me, I will consider that as the act of God through that person. I also believe whenever I do something good to others, I think God is using me as instrumental to do good to the other person.

i believe god shows me the way, quite a few times I have been wondering about something or thinking about doing something and an incident will happen that makes me change my decision, i believe that it is all written oout for us already and god helps lead the way by showing you which path is the right one through other incidents

I think part of hearing God is having the faith the He is speaking to you. Many ways suggested here as to how we hear God can also be explained as conscience or conversations.

Yes, I believe that God speaks to us in various ways. Sometimes we don't slow down long enough to listen. I believe he speaks to us through the Bible, through dreams and sometimes it is just a whisper somewhere deep inside.

As strange as it may sound, yes, I do believe that God talks to me. Over the years, I've noticed that if I listen to my "reasoning" voice, which for me sounds like it's in the back of my head, I stay out of trouble. When I listen to my "what-the-heck" voice, which sounds to me like it's in the front of my head, I usually end up in a lot of trouble. So I've come to the conclusion that the voice in the back of my head is God and if I continue to listen to that voice, my life will be as close to perfect as possible.

That is very much how I feel. Whether it is God speaking to us in that moment, or our God-given conscience, He has provided a way for us to know what is best for us, even if we don't always follow!

Yes, I am sure that He does. I think he speaks to different people in different ways, according to their manner of perception of Him. One can't have a relationship with anything if there were no two way communication, so it follows that, if one believes that God is someone or something it is possible to have a relationship with, then there must be communication of a kind. As an example, if one considers that one has a relationship with one's pets, one talks to them and watches for their response. They don't communicate in words and nor would one expect them to! Many people recognise an impersonal idea of 'goodness' or a set of rules by which the universe and human relationships operate. They have a relationship with this perception because they have moral standards. Sometimes they have to question what is best to do according to their morals and they will perform a kind of communication with their 'inner being' or 'subconscious'. Many find it hard to explain what is happenning here. Some will justify it as human reason but where, ultimately, do the standards by which they measure right and wrong behaviour come from? The word 'conscience' means, literally, 'with knowledge' and assumes a knowledge of something within us that we use as a guide. We learn a great deal of what is good and bad behaviour in our very early childhood, both directly from our parents and by observing and learning how other people behave towards each other. This bank of knowledge is probably what directs 99% of our actions but I believe that there is something else which, if we can listen to it, corroborates our choices. I call it (with all due acknowlegement to George Fox) 'that of God within every man'. My own experience tells me that there is a Being (who some know as God) who is intimately and personally involved with us as our Creator and so is customarily thought of as Father - though Mother is equally applicable, really. I have spoken to this Person and he has spoken to me. My perception is that He (or She) communicates in many different ways, often merely by giving us a feeling of satisfaction when we have made a right decision, but also by opening our minds to a new way of thinking when we read something or hear someone speak. Sometimes (and quite infrequently) we find words in our mind which are in some way 'golden'. More often (and more often than many people will admit) we hear someone speaking to us in our minds. My belief is that this is really the voice of a personal 'angel', who translates the 'feeling' of God to us in our own language. When I first turned around and realised that I was being welcomed, I was very curious about this and asked the name of my 'angel' (he doesn't have wings or live in clouds, by the way!) He replied, with some amusement, that 'I might call him Theodoros' (which I afterwards learnt means 'gift of God') but that it wasn't proper to talk to him directly. The communication route should be Me - God - him - me.

That is a very interesting and insightful response, thank you. Your supposition of having an angel speaking to you is lovely, though I personally believe it is the Holy Spirit that speaks to me. I do agree with the Father/Mother idea. God revealed Himself in a patriarchal society, and so became 'He', but I do not think it is taking away from God to consider Him in the feminine form. God is God, and is above gender. If a person needs to see God as a Mother-figure, then God will open Her arms and be that Mother, just as He is our Father.

Oh yes!  God speaks to us all the time. Through people,  events and circumstances. It all has to do with our awareness. Every conversation I have in my head is with God. Every contact with every person is a contact with God. It has taken me a long time to realize that I always get what I need without exception. The problem lies in my thinking. "If it hurts, it is not what I need". No, it is not what I want! No one likes to hurt. But when I look closely at even the most painful moments in my life I realize they were opportunities to grow, to exercise my free will. I can be grateful (that is really hard) or angry and reactive which is the usual way I have acted. As often as I am able I will whisper in my head when someone makes me angry or asks me for something that is difficult to give,"this is God testing me to see where I'm at right now". Sound's like I am a bit crazy! Right?  But every time I can have that moment of reflection ( you only get a moment) my actions are more loving. Looking back it is so clear how the choices I have made reflected my level of self awareness.  And more importantly, the awareness of how my choices affected others. I believe the most important thing is how we love. There is no higher priority. God provides the world: people, things, and experiences as a mirror for our souls. We can see our reflection in everything around us. This is God speaking to us. Thank you for the question.

That is so beautiful, thank you. I like your idea of stopping and recognizing that God is testing you. You are truly an inspiration.

God talks to everyone, usually thru prayers (our easy access to Him), thru people we deal with (they are His instruments), and thru events in our lives (His guidance). In the bible, He even spoke face to face with His chosen people (thru burning bush, etc), but due to sins and hardened hearts of men, his voice slowly became inaudible that he just spoke thru dreams (like with joseph, daniel, etc). and nowadays his voice can't be heard anymore because men doesn't even believe in Him and those who do are too busy to listen. i know i am guilty of the busy-ness that sometimes i can't take quality time to pray and listen for the answers. but God has His ways to get your attention, sometimes thru blessings (when you heed), and sometimes thru troubles (thru your own doings when you're stubborn). i'm sure others got their own faith and belief, i'm just talkin for myself and what is in my heart. i firmly believe, God never stops talking to us. it's just that when we pray, we keep talking and asking. we tend to forget that communication is always a 2-way process, we need to learn how to listen. i guess right now, He is actually talkin thru this topic :)

That's very interesting, many people probably find God and horoscopes to be contradictory, but God does work in mysterious ways!
