Where did all these racists come from?

I don't normally post angry discussions, particularly about people on myLot, as I usually find the people on here to be friendly, helpful and kind folk. However, over the last few days I've come across several posts which are blatantly racist, offensive and plain ignorant (towards several different races and religions). I'm not naming names or mentioning which discussions they were, but it's made me feel really angry that people feel the need to post such hatred.
I know that there are racists everywhere and that I shouldn't let a couple of ignoramuses get to me, but I do find it shocking, because I haven't come across such extreme cases on here before.
So have you found the amount of racist (and other offensive) content on here increasing recently? Maybe I've just been lucky enough to miss it before. I really hope that this isn't some kind of trend starting.
Do you think that people should be banned from here once they've posted racist or other offensive material? (Or perhaps they are, I'm not sure what the rules are on this one?)

If you see a post that is intentionally racist or offensive you should report it at once because it is a violation of the rules. That is why there is a report [!] link at the side of each post.
I did report a discussion that was racist and offensive. It was removed and the user has had his account closed by myLot.
I think there is also unintentional racism in discussions when some people seem to fail to understand that myLot has members from all over the world, or maybe they think only people of their own race and religion will read their discussions!
We should all be aware of the diversity at myLot and that applies to culture and religion as much as it does to race and nationality.

The terms you agreed when you registered state clearly:
myLot reserves the right to delete any discussion and adjust earnings for any discussion that in the judgment of myLot or any Member violates this Agreement or which may be offensive
and
Prohibited content includes, but is not limited to content that, in the sole discretion of myLot.com:
is patently offensive and promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual

Thanks for your reply. I did report one comment that was blatently racist and offensive - sadly there was nothing unintentional about it, and it there's no way it could have been misinterpreted. Yes, there probably is a lot of unintentional racism in the way that you describe, plus I also think that a lot of people (in real life and probably on here too), are so used to saying certain things that they don't even realise that they're being racist. Maybe they don't have a lot of religious or cultural diversity where they live, so it is acceptable to say these things there. And also, by not getting to know people of different religions/races/colours/nationalities they maybe believe all the stereotypes and false information that they might hear about them.
I also spotted the part of the myLot terms that mentions racism. Thanks for copying it here. It's not easy to find buried at the bottom of the page, and I'm not surprised that people might miss this.

I am not sure what the rules are about it, but I think something needs to be done. I am really new to this site and I have noticed there is alot of racist stuff said. I got four small girls and alot of time they sit beside me and read the post. I have taught my kids not to be racist. When the girls sit here and read stuff about other people and they ask why. I have no idea on what to say. So I agree maybe Mylot needs us to complain about it and bring it to their attention. I know when I signed up it said they needed help with different types of problems and they would like us to bring it to their attention. So if we ban together maybe we can take care of it.

Yes, you're right. I guess you'll just have to explain that there are a lot of people who choose not to learn about those who are different to themselves and this leads to ignorance, suspicion and intolerance. Ok, they might be a bit young to understand all this(!), but it's sadly something that they'll have to find out about. I know others disagree, but I also think it's right that we can report offensive material. Thanks for your reply.

Hi liquorice. Being fairly new to MyLot, I haven't seen anything offensive yet but like every thing else in the world, I'm sure there are a few bad apples in the bunch. I don't know with all certainly but I am pretty sure that MyLot would ban such things if it is reported or if they come across it themselves.

Thanks for your answer. Yes, I agree, you would expect to find some racism on here, just like you would in the real world. I just hadn't really come across it before in the discussions that I've seen, and I know it's naive, but it shocked me. And now I'm suddenly noticing it a lot more.
Since posting this discussion I've re-discovered the myLot terms (at the bottom left-hand corner of every page), and these include the following:
"Content/Activity Prohibited. The following is a partial list of the kind of content that is illegal or prohibited to post on or through the myLot services. myLot reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate legal action against anyone who, in myLot's sole discretion, violates this provision, including without limitation, removing the offending communication or photo from the myLot services and terminating the membership of such violators. Prohibited content includes, but is not limited to content that, in the sole discretion of myLot.com:
1. is patently offensive and promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual;
2. harasses or advocates harassment of another person... (it continues)"
which suggests that offending material might get removed.

Racism has always been right there in front of all of us. The only think that keeps it at bay is some of the things that people talk about. Here in Mylot there are alot of discussions that can spark that racism from those that feel that way. You now have see first hand that it's there and has not gone any where.

Are you surprised to see such content, or would you be more surprised if you didn't see it at all? For me, it's the later because I realize you will always have someone who ignorantly think their above another because of their race. My thoughts are to let it be their issue and not make it my own. If the post you refer to is blatantly racist, it probably would and 'should' be removed. It just won't change the fact that they are who/what they are.

Yes, I suppose you're right. I think because I haven't much racist content so far (and I've been on here several months now), it was shocking when I did see some, and then started seeing it a lot more since then. Yes, I would hope that particularly abusive posts are removed but I get your point, and realise that this won't have any hope of changing the views of the racists themselves.

Oops, sorry - in between the words haven't and much in my first line, I should've put the word seen.

As far as I know racists come from fear, the old us or them philosophy, most likely
this came from when we were small tribes protecting hunting grounds etc. But I mean folks get a life, we now know that we all came from the same beginings and they were Africian. Just because your parents felt that way doesn't mean you have to be racists. It's a very small world and we all have to learn to get along or we'll all be gone, welcome the ants.

Ooh, I agree. And now that the world has become even smaller and races and religions are all living alongside one another in so many countries, can't we just learn more about each other and rid ourselves of the suspicion and mistrust that breeds this hatred and fear? We're all people.

Actually I don't remember seeing any "racist" topics here in a long time.
As of late I saw a couple of topics exposing black, Muslim racists but that's not the same.
I don't think anything should be "banned", let the truth be seen, bad or good. Isn't that why we have these silly stars, so we can judge each other?
Besides, you can scroll past any topic you want.

Sadly I've spotted some recently, although, like I said, I've never really noticed any before. I agree that exposing racists of any race or religion isn't the same as being racist. I think that anything that abuses somebody because of their race or religion should be banned, but of course that's my own personal opinion, which I'm happy to be able to express. Although, as I said above, I believe that some things (such as protecting peoples' rights not to be abused because of their race or religion) are more important than freedom of speech. And myLot also seems to reflect this in their terms.

To be honest with you, as of yet I cannot say that I have come across any posts that I have deemed to be racist against others. Saying that however I mainly only answer my friends discussions when they come in through email and none of them are like that.
I think I would be concerned to come across anything like that and I think if I did then I would be upset by it, I am pretty sure though that if myLot are aware of these discussions existing then they will be removed.

Yes, I was the same until recently. That's why I was shocked to find some (I know, I am quite naive sometimes!) It did upset me, and most of all angered me, although I realise that I should expect it, as sadly racism is everywhere. Yes, I would hope that myLot would remove such posts (although hopefully not the entire discussion, as it's unfair to penalise everyone involved in the discussion for one person's mistake).
Thanks for your answer.
