Hey, witty newbie! Welcome to myLot! If you read the ingredients, you'll see that crab boil is almost the same as pickling spices. You sort of have to open the box and leave the room until the strongest smells dissipate! I guess being born in New England makes that part of everyday thinking! Anyway, let it, and you, breathe a while before you use it or wear a gas mask, because that stuff is going to get you!

Oh Wow! I had NO CLUE you were suppose to let it breath first lol. I dont remember reading that in the directions lol. Guess they just assume you are going to cook it outside lol. Ty so much for letting me know what to do next time!! I have another box here at home already so I am sure we will be making some more soon!! :-)

You certainly are! Usually the pots we would use the boil in were outside on the barbecue because they were too big for the stove. I'd forgotten that. It's been aa long time since I was a child!

I'm sorry, but I don't know what those are. I have never heard of low country boils. Could you explain what they are and what they have to do with cooking? In reading the other response, I am assuming it has something to do with spices, and I know from some of the things I cook that certain spices will make me cough a lot when processing them...especially hot chili peppers when put in a blender. Would that have anything to do with it?

That link did not work for me. It came up page not found. I will have to do some research and learn something new. It really makes me curious now that you said to pour it out on the picnic table and eat it that way.

This is the one I copied... I am not sure if I can post this link here.. it is NOT a referral site or anything at all to do with making money lol... well unless you are going to cook Low Country Boil & sell it... then hey? lol. www.kingofpeace.org/lowcountryboil.html We use basically the same things... But I use Frozen Corn halfs... Shrimp.. we aim towards the with tail on frozen shrimps but use whatever we have on hand... I get the smaller red potatos... and I LOVE whole mushrooms in ours too.. Oh and duh the sausage. We use Hillshire farms beef sausage... It is so great imo! If you have a picnic table the traditional way of eating it is drain it.. then poor it right out on the table (cover the table with a clean table cloth or newspapers) That is the way we ate it the first time...

I've been researching low country boil recipes ever since this discussion was started. They all sound really good. But I don't find much about the history of them. The recipes I have found, some use spice mixes and some don't. I especially think the idea of pouring it all out on a picnic table covered with newspapers is cool. I am going to have to try something like this sometime.
