It seems that Paul was a lot closer to Julian than his father was. They hung around a lot together and Julian has a lot more pictures from his childhood with Paul than with John. Julian only discovered about twenty years later that the song was about him. Apparently John thought that the song was a message to him. But Paul says no it was about his concern with Julian and wanted him to draw courage. The song is one of the top all-time best sellers and on the top of the list of my favorite songs of all time.

the song was written by Paul McCartney about Julian Lennon who was a child at the time his parents got divorced, and about Yoko Ono becoming his step mother

Paul McCartney came up with this song when he was driving out to see John Lennon's Son Julian - John was leaving his first wife so Paul wanted to comfort Julian and thought of the song as "Hey Julian" but later changed it to "Hey Jude" because it sounded better.
