If you can't sleep what do you do?

Good early morning everyone, I woke up at 5:30 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. Too many things going through my head. So, if you wake up during the night and can't sleep, what do you do? I had a disagreement with my husband before I went to sleep and so my mind wouldn't rest. I got a few hours and then no more. So instead of laying there thinking about it I decided to visit with friends, and here I am. This is much better than laying in bed worrying and tossing and turning. It also helps clear my head. Coming to Mylot let me catch up on responses and allowed me to actually start a discussion. I'm usually too busy responding to my friends discussions that I don't have time to start my own. So here it is. So what do you do? leenie

Sorry about your loss of sleep. Hope that you and your husband have settled your disagreement by now. I, too woke up early this morning, even earlier than you. I tried to go back to sleep to no avail. Since my husband was already up, I got, also. Usually, it is a problem that keeps me from sleeping. Frequently, like you, it is a disagreement with my spouse. At that time, I will just pray about the problem until I can relax and go back to sleep. This time, I have no idea why I couldn't sleep then, but I'd better go try to get some sleep now.

bellis I hope you sleep well tonight. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to why some things happen. We just have to roll with the punches(not literally)of course. sleep well. leenie

I don't sleep very well anyway. Must be part of the normal aging process. I just pray that my body adapts to the new reality, and I won't automatically fall asleep during the day. So those periods at night when I can't sleep, I spend the time in prayer, seeking the Face of God.

Hi August, You are a little young for the aging process to begin. You must be a light sleeper. They say that men don't need quite as muc sleep as women, but I think it might be only an hour or two less. Prayer often works for me as well. I hope your sleeping problems get better soon. leenie welcome to mylot!!

Hi leenie, If the reason why I can't sleep is my husband, I will not let him sleep without talking about our problem..Anyway, I used to be online doing mylotting if I find it hard to sleep but this is not really a problem since I can sleep deep once I am in bed at the exact time! LOL!

Hi Che, I really didn't want him awake with me. I wanted the time to myself. I really enjoyed my quiet time on mylot. I took a nap later after he got up. He is in the beginning phase of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder so he is having a rough time. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to deal with it. Everything is cool right now. leenie

Hi leenie, I almost never have any problem sleeping, but if I ever do, you've given me a great idea. I know a lot of people who read, but as I say I sleep well so have never thought much about it before. Blessings.

Hi Pose, Lucky you not to have any sleeping problems. I feel pretty lucky too because I seldom have a sleeping problem. Just once in a while. Now that I'm not working anymore I can catch up easily. Looks like you're a long time mylotter. Take care. lenie

Hi leenie50 - It was probably a good idea for you to get up. I heard that if you cannot sleep then you should get out of bed and leave the room for awhile and read or something. I also read that if you want to get back to sleep, do not watch tv or turn on a bunch of lights because those types of things re-activate your mind making it more difficult to get back into the sleep mode. Were you able to get back to sleep after spending time on the computer for awhile? I have done that before when I cannot sleep. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... I guess it just depends on what is keeping me up. Like an argument with my husband would definitely make it more difficult for me to sleep if it was a bad one. I guess reading makes me the most sleepy... unless it is a really really good book! :)

Hi leenie50 - I really like to read medical thrillers, especially books by the author named Robin Cook. I have read almost all of the ones he has written so far. My husband just gave me the newest one in the series and I can't wait to start reading it. Boy... we barely slept a wink last night. My husband & I are currently staying with my mom in her apartment on the bay until we move into our new place next week. My mom lives on the 1st floor and her upstairs neighbors have a son who is about 20 years old. The parents went on vacation in Florida and there son is home. You can imagine... he has been pretty quiet until last night. He must have had a bunch of friends over because all we could hear all night long was running and stomping upstairs. It sounded as if they were a bunch of elephants or wrestling or something, I don't know. But, we didn't get to sleep until sometime after 1:30 AM! They are loud again this morning too, but not quite as bad. I hope he isn't having his friends over for the entire weekend coming up! Yikes! I need to get some sleep already. LoL! Take care.

koala, Have you read Patricia Cornwell? She used to be a medical examiner or Forensic scientist. She's great. I haven't read any Robin Cook. I'l check him out.I also love James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Catherine coulter and a few others. Take care. leenie

Hi Koala, You couldn't be more right!! I would tag you if I hadn't already tagged someone else by accident. So I gave you a plus. I find mylot so stimulating that I could probably stay up all night if I was rested before hand. No I didn't go back to sleep. I had too much on my mind and was not interested in sleeping. The problem with my husband is an ongoing thing. He has bipolar disorder so things get stirred up once in a while and I just have to hang back till I find the best way to deal with it. This site is a great release and I have found more friends than I have had in a life time! What kind of books do you like? I really love suspence thrillers. Not like Stephen King, he's a bit over the top for me. Well, got to move on. thanks for writing. leenie

I tend to either read my book. If i dont read i get up and watch tv, play on the computer - mylot, go for a walk. It all depends on why i cant sleep or the time.

Its a farm...nearest living person is 3 miles away. Its not like theres people wandering the gravel roads waiting for someone to happen by. The most likely thing to "get" me is a coyote or a bear or maybe one of my cows. I refuse to live my life afraid to go outside on my family's land.

Hi Leenie50, I get up if it just early in the morning. I normally get up anywhere from 6 to 7 anyways just to get a few hours of quite and calm. But I get up have a glass of tea and read for a bit and then I start in on the cleaning. No reason to lay in bed and just toss and turn. Like I said thou I normally get up early anyways. Now if it like 2 I dont know what I would do as that hasnt happened to me. When I hit the bed Im normally out like a light from my day.

When I can't sleep I would make some tea, it helps me relax. And if that doesn't help, I would turn on the TV. I would have to much problems keeping my mind focused to be on the computer, so I wouldn't do that. I hope you're having better nights now. Have a nice day

Camomille tea is a good one to relax. And if you like the taste: lavender is good when you're having sleeping problems. It's not a nice taste, but with honey it's drinkable. I only drink it when I'm really having a couple of bad nights and I really need some sleep. Have a nice day

watching the stars is a wonderful way to use the early morning. by doing that you will come to learn things about yourself. Also, being young as you are, you must know that every experience in your life, good or bad will help determine the person that you are. Try to teach yourself to step back and observe, people, situations and all the beauty created for us. Don't miss the moments. Every moment has something to teach you. Thanks for your wonderful idea. leenie

Hey frankie, Sheep are boring, try counting dogs!! lol Really though, how many and what kind of dogs do you have? I only have one little mini dachshund and he is part of my sleeping problem. My husband doesn't like dogs, even though I had Bogie when we got married 5 years ago. He wants me to get rid of him and I am fighting him on this issue. Of course there is a lot more to it, but I'm not ready to go into it right now. I just don't know what to do. My husband has Bipolar Disorder, if you know what that is you will understand my situation a little better. Wish me luck or a prayer might help. Hugsss leenie

I really can go mad if I don't get my quota of sleep and sometimes when I wake up. I feel fidgety and restless.I get up walk about and start busing myself with this and thatbut NO WATCHING THE TV OR MOVIES.You may think me crazy, but sometimes I cut vegetables for the next day cooking, keep my clothes ready to wear for work the next morning, sometimes clean my study table ....by then I drift to sleep se easily . There have been times when I used to look up the clock and count the time I havent slept...but now I don't

hi there,i know how frustrating lack of sleep can be,i go at least one day a month with no sleep at all.But when can't sleep i try to keep my mind focused on one chain of thought, because, like you i sometimes have so many things racing through my mind (thre's not that much space in there anyway!)If that doesn't work i get up and do something productive,i make handmade jewellery so i'll sometimes be awake at 4am making a bracelet,If you really feel there's no chance in you getting back to sleep, you might aswell use the extra time to your advantage!

Hi 3 Funny you should say not much space because I certainly relate to that!! Getting up this morning was my best solution. I used to do some beading as well. It is so much fun. I did bracelets, book marks which I still do occassionaly and eye glass holders. It is so relaxing. I gave all my supplies to my sister because she really got into it and I wasn't doing any. leenie

When i can't sleep I will lay there and watch T.v or I might think and i am usually thinking "FALL ASLEEP ALREADY" lol it really sucks not being able to sleep or fall back to sleep. sometimes i smoke to help me sleep too and if nothing works i might get up and do something till i start to get sleepy again then i will get back in bed and hope i i will be able to sleep this time around. I have problems sleeping though they have gotten a little better but it used to be really bad when i was younger and sometimes i will get it bad.. like two weeks for two days in a row i got a lot less sleep then i usually do but then it caught up to me and i made up for it on the 3rd day. lol

sameroad, I think if I do what I did this last time I'll get less sleep. I can be on the computer for hours and not get sleepy. If I read my eyes get tired. But the mylotting was more fun. I'm not working now so I can sleep in or take a nap. In the past like you I have gone a couple days or so without enough sleep and had to make up for it too. leenie

If i wake up during the night and can't go back to sleep, i open my computer and go mylotting look up my emails , browse or watch tv. If there are no good movies on cable anymore i grab a book to read till my eyes get tired and i drift into sleep again. Usually, i am able to go back to sleep after sometime.

When I am having trouble going to sleep, I read. But if I wake up early and can't sleep, I do the same thing - I get online and start doing various things that are productive. I have alot of sites that pay for doing various things so I start on them until my kids are up. Then the real day begins.
