I am an Australian that lived in India for a year and continues to work at the moment for an India based company. So maybe I can give you an interesting perspective on this!
When I first realized that arranged marriages were a common practice in India I was horrified! The whole concept seemed so business like! But after working so closely wth Indian colleagues that were in arranged marriages and after attending a few weddings where again it was all arranged; I started to become a little more open minded about it.
The fact of the matter is that families take lust, crushes and fleeting attractions out of the equation and choose a partner for their son or daughter that they feel is most compatible. The two become engaged and then become married. Nervousness becomes friendship; friendship becomes mutual respect; and then eore you know it the mutual respect turns into love. And speaking of respect, the married couples respect for their families decisions ensures that they will do whatever it takes to make the marriage work!
You only have to look at the divorce rates in the Western world compared to the rates in India to see that maybe it is not sch a bad thing after all. Yes sometimes the marriages ae politically motivated or caste related; and yes not all work out as they should. But I do have to admit that although I still do not consider arranged marriages to be something that I would embrace for myself or for my own children; I do have a deeper respect for the concept now.
