My Mom is 83 & having a hard time right now. She's diabetic controlled by pills. About 4 months ago she suddenly became dizzy & unstable when she tried to walk. Her doc chalked it up to Vertigo. Well it just kept getting worse & doc put her on a motion sickness pill. About 2 weeks ago her doc finally decided her symptoms don't seem to be Vertigo & sent her to a neurologist. He determined from just lookin at her that it was not a stroke nor a brain tumor. Then he sent her for an MRI. We don't have the results back from the MRI yet. She's fallen 4 times this past week & started talking out of her head..The woman is doing good to sit up & telling people about the Inn she stayed at for 3 days & how they screwed up the bill. Now she's talking to dead people. She fell again this morning so she's at the hospital now waiting to be seen. My uncle said it sounded to him like she had Sundowners.
PLEASE!!! Has anyone out there heard of any of these symptoms??? Do you know anything about Sundowners??? I know within 139,000 members there are surely a few are nurses or doctors. I will appreciate any ideas you have so I can suggest them to her doctor. I AM GETTING DESPERATE!!!

Hi There Marissa. You Mom is going through what my mom has gone through. My mom is a diabetic also, and treats it with pills. Lots of times it attacks the nervous system. This could be effecting her legs.
After taking some antibiotics, My mom has also got the Sundowners. It is when they are like dreaming but they are awake. They have a hard time figuring out what is real. Because of the dream like state that they are in. It is hard for the loved ones. It usually goes away after a few days.
I hope that this helps....

Thank you Howard!!! I had done a search on sundowners & found a few sites but they didn't give me much information. I've bookmarked that site as it goes into great detail & seems to relate more to her symptoms. No, she's not in assisted care. She & my Dad are living in their own home that they've shared for the last 51 years. Up until about the last 2 weeks, they could completely take care of themselves. They just celebrated their 65th anniversary. Thank God she was still lucid at the time.

I have never heard of sundowners but just checked it out a little bit. Sorry I can not be of any help. I just wanted to let you know that prayers will go out to your mother and your family and I hope they figure out what the problem is and get it under control before she falls and breaks something. Please keep us updated.

LadyM - this is what I found on Sundowner's:
'Sundowner’s Syndrome is the name given to an ailment that causes symptoms of confusion after “sundown.” These symptoms appear in people who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia. Not all patients who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s exhibit Sundowner’s symptoms, however. Conversely, some people exhibit symptoms of dementia all day which grow worse in the late afternoon and evening, while others may exhibit no symptoms at all until the sun goes down. Some doctors believe it’s an accumulation of all of the sensory stimulation from the day which begins to overwhelm and cause stress. Some speculate that Sundowner’s Syndrome is caused by hormonal imbalances that occur at night. Still others believe that the onset of symptoms at night is due to simple fatigue, while some believe it has to do with the anxiety caused by the inability to see as well in the dark.'
So the question becomes - is your mother already in any stage of 'dementia' or mental confusion? Her age is a big factor too.
As for the diabetes - my own mother in law is diabetic. She didn't exhibit until she was in her mid 60's and is now in her mid 70's. For the past year she has been unable to support herself on her legs and is now in a wheelchair. It's common in diabetes to have this happen, as well as to suffer mental confusion, dizzyness and loss of motor control.
I used to work for a woman who had been diabetic all her life. She was in her mid-70's and sharp as a tack and then one day - bang! For no apparent neurological reason she became forgetful, confused and talked about the past as if she was there. Within three months she had to sell her home and move into assisted care. The doctors related it to her age and diabetes.
I don't know what to tell you my dear friend, except to know that you and she are in my prayers. Please let us know the results of the MRI and diagnosis if they can come up with one. Hugs and God be with you.

My dear, dear Marissa,
I just now logged into MyLot and saw your post. I am so sorry to have to see you go thru this. It has to be just terrible.
I see that you have gotten some posts in regards to Sundowners. I hope this information will help.
Hopefully by now maybe the doctors have given you some type of firm diagnosis and prognosis. I hope it will be good news.
I wish I had your phone number of even email because I would call maybe it would help to talk to someone. I am a good listener.
Your mother and you are in my prayers. Please at least keep me updated.
Take care,
Char

I couldn't talk most of the day. I was having such awful thoughts. Now the docs have ruled out a brain tumor & all the things that were said here today makes sense. Alzheimers is a cruel disease but so much better than brain cancer that I feel a lil relief. I need your prayers more than anything else. My Dad is 85 & they have been married for 65 years so he's not dealing with it very well either. At least the stress of today is a lil bit eased & hopefully when she sees the neurologist on Monday we will know much more. THANK YOU ONE & ALL

My great-grandmother is 83 also she does this same thing. Her's is from alzheimers. She talks to Poppa her late husband and she falls at least once a week. She has broken her hip once we think twice because she just started limping a bit. I don't know much about sundowners except thats what they call Nanna's episodes at night when she asks are they going home or does she have bed there to sleep and stuff like that. Maybe you should go and ask her doctor to evaluate her for alzheimers. It might knock one thing out of the way.

Your mother sounds a lot like my neighbour LadyM. She has a form of dementia that is caused by hundreds of little stroke like explosions in her head and make her do very weird stuff indeed - including self harming. She is now in a home at the young age of 69. I can't give you any practical advice except seek different medical opinions. But I can give you a cyber hug and kiss. XX HUGs.

THANK YOU P1ke. At this point, I needed the hug worse than the advice. I've received a lot of wonderful advice on what might be wrong. She's seeing a neurosurgeon tomorrow. Hopefully with the questions my friends here have given me, he will finally figure it out.

I know this may seem silly but not only with everything else your checking her for check to see if she is dehydrated and have her tested for a UTI. with aged people a UTI and dehydration can cause the most right there with it elderly person to act strange. I have seen people try to strip in public and act loony all because of that. I worked in a nursing home for about 10 yrs before staying home with my kids. Please have her checked for this. Amazing enough that may be all it is and you could have he r back quickly with antibiotics. YOU AND HER ARE IN MY PRAYERS

OMG thank you!!! I doubt that the doctors are looking for something that logical. I'll be sure to ask him if he truly does see her on Monday.
Prayer is the answer to most of our problems. Thank you for your kind words!!!

Once the falling starts it really starts to mess them up, but menieres, (spelling) runs in my husbands family. It is a middle ear problem and really impacts their balance. You would need to go to an ear, nose, throat specialist, has anyone talked to you about it?
