Are you an illegal downloader?

I freely admit that occasionally I do download music from the internet for free. I hasten to add that if I like the album I don't hesitate to go out and buy it. Sure I think it is wrong to take away money from someone who has worked hard to sell their product but why should I buy an album that turns out to be a load of rubbish? I would quite happily join a website that would allow me to listen to an album for lets say 30 days so I could decide if I want to purchase it or not. Does such a website already exist? I know there are sites where you can listen to samples of tracks but that isn't enough!
What are your views on illegal downloading? Is it ok or completely wrong?

Hi, there, and no i dont download illegally i try to go to legal sites only, but i wish they would change some of the laws when it comes to music downloading becuse not everyone has the money to buy whole albums, music should be openly available to everyone without a person spending a small fortune besides what if you only like one or two songs on the album, and i tend to like songs that are hard to find i finally found this song i love but i found out that i have to buy the whole album in order to get the song, they should develop a new system where both the artist and consumer can be happy, its really frustrating that we cant download with out worrying about getting in trouble.

Hey there apples99
My thoughts exactly. Sometimes I only like a few tracks of an album and like I said the rest can be rubbish and therefore why should the artist gain from producing such tosh? I don't mind paying money if I am going to get a great album to listen to and www.play.com offer great prices on all their products.
Thank you for your response

Well downloading music files isnt completely illegal if you are storing them on your computer only for 24hours, afterwards you must delete them..
There is much sites , and programs that allows you to download them easily ...
Anyways yeah im pretty much illegal downloader, like probably 90% of the internet users ;)

Hey there sanokser
Well in Britain they are making a really big deal about it all and threatening to cut users off from the internet if they don't stop. The thing is that artists sure as heck don't make their money from music sales on their own now do they?
Thank you for your response my fellow illegal downloader!

Hi,humbug25 i dont download illegally i usually just buy things like music and movies but i think that they should change the laws to fit the Internet age i understand the copy right laws, but its not like those artist or actors are gonna go hungry if people download a few free songs or movies, just look at how most entainers live, i think they should make a program for the net where people can legally download music and movies free they should make it so the program and company pays the artist while allowing the people using the program to download for free, and i think that the music and movie industry needs to find a better way to work with the internet and i think if they make a totally free and legal downloading program that is paid for through sponsors and the the downloading company pays its artist a percentage of its revenue then that would be grate for both consumers and the entertainment industry, i do respect the artist becuse my parents are music artist to, but i do think that the industry should lighten up a little, and not penalize good people so harshly for loving music because if you think of it this way listening to the radio is free so why shouldn't downloading be free to as long as the artist still gets paid.

Rhaposdy is a good site to listen before buying. You are allowed to listen to the song as many times as you like. The cost of $9.99/month. Then if you want to buy, you pay them for the right to download & cut a CD.

Hi there dowie27
Oooops nevermind for responding twice though I am curious to know how you managed it!!
I totally agree with you. I once bought an album because I loved two of the tracks that were on it and was so so disappointed with the rest of the album I wished I had never bought but they have my money now!! Now I never buy an album unless I have downloaded it and heard it first!
Thanks for both of your responses!!

In answer to your question Humbug, most bands put at least 3 or 4 of their songs up on their myspace pages prior to releasing an album. Some (Firewater for example) put the full album up. I think downloading is necessary in these days, good bands aren't played on the radio very often (obviously depends on the channels available to you) and there's too much crap music around. If the prices of albums were made smaller (after all the fat cats of the music business take most of it) in the early 90s, this problem wouldn't have arisen or maybe less so at least but now the music is available freely, it's very hard to convince people to pay for the music, even if it would be cheaper.

Hey there dangaroo (love your name by the way!!)
You are totally right. I do like to buy cd's though. I have a friend who downloads albums and movies all the time then prints off the covers. He must be spening a small fortune on ink and I think the quality of a home printer is as good either, I am a bit of a perfectionist with things like that. I am sure that it would be cheaper for him to buy the album at the end of the day rather spend so much money on the ink!

Illegal downloading of anything that has copyright
is illegal. Many people through out the world is
doing it on the net. Downloading is not really my thing.
Buying things is much better because you help others earn.

the downloading is not illegal here in the netherlands but the problem is in the uploading thats not allowed to do.
They can not forbid download bcuz the same you do with your mail ( thats also downloading ) and on the other side if production companies paying the actors less money then the movies would be much cheaper and then people would buy it.
So i think its there own fault with doing this

hi just for ur information over 90% of users download movies, music or software from internet but who is to decide what's legal or illegal. its not the artists who make company but the big companies who make profit, can u tell me y they put such a high price tag for music cds, dvds and softwares. because they want to make money like bill gates sell things at 100 times the money invested in it...this is not right... music is for all.....profit should be made but not like this...i think keeping price tag low will bring down illegal downloading if that's what u call....internet will become useless with no downloading then what will be the intenet service provider do..what will be the use of high speeds like 8 Mbps...

Hi there neothegod
I didn't know that the percentage of users downloading was that high! They are trying to make a big deal about it here in the UK and tell us that it is the artists that are suffering and are threatening to cut people of the internet but I don't think the internet providers are happy to do that just yet and are sending out letters of warning at the moment.

Hi there luckycui
I guess it is no different to lending your friend a cd or something and they download it onto their compute, it's just that you are giving it to someone who is somewhere in the world and you don't actually know them!
Thanks for your response!

I have downloaded illegally in the past Humbug, but stopped a couple of years ago. Actually most of the stuff that I downloaded were songs that I already had on vinyl. I wish the music industry wasn't so hypocritical. They pay the artists a pittance compared what they cream off. However, I guess that it is immoral so I no longer do it.

Hey there p1kef1sh
You're showing your age there!! I think that artists make more money these days from interviews, tv appearances and air time. I think that if they had to rely on record sales (ok I'm showing my age now!) they would all be surviving on baked beans on toast!
Cheers for your response!

Usually you can get a good enuf listen on the you tube,im nt for or against downloading from the internet and have to say that ive done it here, and until now I didnt really think it was any great crime, but if it has to stop then fair enuf.My lad uses MSN music and he pays for that,he said that I could always have his acount number and password,so that I could get my msic from there,if not im gonna use the Itunes ,they arent dear, and its pretty simple to use,and burn.

Hi Abby123
I can honestly say that I am not a big fan of tube maybe because I haven't used it enough to really figure it out and feel that it takes a lot of surfing to find what I am really looking for. I find it easier to go to the website type in what I want and download it then listen to it while playing in mylot. Still if they banned it for everyone and it no longer existed to download it then like you I say, so be it!
Thank you for responding!

I totally agree with you and sometimes I like just one music then I would collect cds for one music only? Pffff. I download all my music for sure but I can compensate by going in a concert and paying the ticket if the artist is extremely good! I do not know about that website but what I do now is I use shoutcast radio I choose my music and do not need even to download they play it constantly, try it!

Hi ya valeria1
I too listen to the radio a lot and hear the same tunes over and over again but sometimes I like to listen to them in the car on long journeys and like to listen to what I want when I want. I listen to music through my pc at nightime when I am on mylot as I don't like what is on the radio during that time. Artists sure make their money when they do concerts not only from ticket sales but from the expensive merchandise sold there so they are by no means poor!
Thank you for your response!

All of us like to be rewarded by our efforts, so do the singers/bands/musicians. They are expecting to get profit for their work by people buying his Cd's/Dvd's, so anyone wich are illegal downloading musics are desrespecting those rights, and i'm totally agains it.
I don't buy much, because i've my life prioritys, but that only makes me more criterious about the music i buy.

Well i agree with that also, but it's not musicians fault, it's their record companies and agencies wich made huge profit with them.
