Things that PUT YOU OFF swimming

Hi to all, I love swimming, hence why it is on my MyLot. I think it is a great and fun way to stay in shape. However, there are certain things that made me concious of swimming in certain places, things like:- In the sea : - Sharks, It is possibly due to growing up and being able to see more Shark documentaries. - Jelly fish, probably the same as above. Freshwater (lakes, rivers etc.) - I read somewhere that there are little tiny (organisms or fish) that can swim up your genitals and live there, erugh. - I also watched this documentary a while back where these guys were swimming in a lake and there were freshwater crocodiles at the bottom of it, it was only when one of the crocodiles felt threatened by someone swimming above them that the attacked. I hope I have not alleviated anyones fears of swimming because I still love it and was swimming on a UK beach (well in the sea obviously) but not very far out in case the sharks came to eat me. lol Thanks for reading Rob:)

I went for a swim in a swampy pond in Kakadu National Park in Australia. I didn't really want to but I was being bitten by many insects and all the other people were doing so. Luckily there weren't any crocodiles in it. I heard that one pool by Twin Twin Falls is cleared of any crocodiles at the start of the dry season. However by accident one was left there giving the first of the season tourists that swam there a shock. Luckily they saw it and ran out of the water or they one of them might have been eaten. On Christmas Day I was at Sarina Beach on the Coast of tropical Queensland. I knew that it was stinging jelly box season but I so desperately wanted a swim. I put on a pair of tights over my legs for protection in case I was stung. Thank goodness I was alright and I didn't get stung. If someone does they come out of the water with marks like slapped with red marks all over them and beaches have vinegar on them that can help with the incredible stinging sensation. The victim must get to a hospital as quickly as possible or they might die. I love snorkeling around coral reefs. Off the coast of Western Australia we were taken away from this crystal clear water to search for manta rays. They like dirty water by comparison to the tropical fish. It was deep water without any coral and I was scared. The guide held my hand when she saw a manta ray and we swam together. Seeing such a beautiful creature was a magical experience. Wow! I went on a snorkeling trip in the Maldives with a group of Germans. The sea was quite rough and I felt worried getting into the ocean. I saw some lovely colorful coral but I kept drifting in the strong current. Waves were splashing over me and so I couldn't breathe all that well. I desperately tried to get back to the boat and I felt close to tears. Most thankfully a German man helped me by taking me back to the boat. I have snorkeled with black tipped sharks in French Polynesia and nurse sharks in Belize. However it is the huge sharks that are dangerous and it would be terrifying to see one of those.

Hi Maximax, Wow what a reply, thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your experiences and am totally jealous :-p. I have yet to travel to the places you mentioned but hope with great anticipation that I will one day, get to travel more. It must have been very hard to come back to Weston Super Mare after visiting such great places? Speaking of which I'm sorry to hear about your Pier burning down a few weeks ago. It sounds like you travel quite frequently? what is your secret? :-D Thanks for reading. Rob:)

I LOVE swimming and especially love swimming in the ocean. Sharks and jellyfish don't concern me as I grew up in Australia and things like this are common. What I don't like to do though is swim somewhere where I cannot see the bottom or where the water is not clear. The fact of the matter is that you have more chances of being struck by lightning than you do of being attacked by a shark or crocodile! Common sense also prevails and most of the time when people ARE attacked by crocodiles for example, it is because they have ignored warnings and swam where they shouldn't. And by the way I don't think the UK has much of a shark problem! I think they might find the water a bit too cold!

Hi James, Thanks for your response dude, The UK seas are not what you might call clear watered you defiantly can't see the bottom so that is a good proportion of my fears. The UK has seen sightings of sharks (not so much crocodiles though lol) I remember one such sighting was of a great white feeding something like 18 meters off the coast of a sea resort here called Devon (South West coast of the UK) back in 2003, and another one in a similar area last year. While not dangerous to us, many basking sharks have been seen in the waters surrounding the Isle Of Man (a small island between Wales and Ireland approx 572 square kilometres) I'm glad that you like swimming, and to close I'm going to say, if i do get struck by lightning you are going to feel very bad. lol Thanks for reading Rob:)

I am not into swimming. I like to but I am shy to take a formal schooling considering my age. My pre-school daughter studied basic swimming last summer. And she now swim. I envy her. But I a happy considering the fact that she is my daughter. She fulfilled my frustrations.
