As a mother I can remember when I was in school. I remember getting out of school about mid-May and heading back mid-August. With my girls I have noticed that school gets out later and later every year. It starts back sooner and sooner every year. So my question to you is does it seem to you as the school year is getting longer? Are these summer breaks getting shorter?

The older I get, it seems the shorter they are! When I was a kid, we'd get out right after Memorial Day and start after Labor Day. The states keep adding days to the school year to prepare the kids for those standardized tests that won't leave any child behind! Sorry, I'm a teacher and not ready to go back quite yet! We start August 20.

My girls got out of school on June 1st and had to go back on August 11th. To me it seems that the summer is getting cut short. All my girls have been tested and all of the are gifted even the one in kindergarden. I will not advance them, because then they want work as hard at school or at home with the work. Honestly I am not sure where they get the gifted thing from unless it is because they are all girls and are really close in ages. I have caught them this summer reading to each other and doing math. So I guess they are teaching each other. Happy MyLotting!!

My youngest went to preschool 3 years. Her birthday falls weird so she has been in school counting this school year four years and she is smarter than the kindergarden class. She can do everything the first grade class is doing and some of the second grade class work, but I don't want to advance her, because then she will not want to work at her studies. Am I wrong with not advancing her. I feel she should stay in there with her friends.

Good decision in not putting the girls in school "early"! I did that with my older daughter and regretted it. She turned 5 two weeks past the cutoff date for kindergarten and we thought if we put her in early, she could be in the regular classes and do well without the gifted services. What we learned was, 1)truly gifted kids think differently and have special needs that can be addressed in the gifted classes, and 2)she wasn't developmentally ready in the later years to fit in with the older kids in her grade. As a teacher, I see kids all the time who could be leaders in their class if they had one more year to mature. Better that they stay with their peers! (And yes, you do seem to have a shorter summer! :-(

Wow it sure seems like they are getting shorter. I love summer and wished it lasted longer. I know when summer is over that winter is just around the corner, which I would just assume skip that season.

I really don't like the cold either, but my children and hubby love it. I just like to stay inside where it is warm and stay beside the fireplace. I lived in Indiana. I made it through one winter and I had to move back to the south. I just could not take it. Happy Mylotting!!

I thought you meant is summer getting shorter in terms of the weather and how long it's nice for. I was going to say yes, we hardly seem tog et any summery sun in the uk any more! I don't have kids so don't know about the breaks, but i prefer it when the kids are at school becuase then they are not round our way causing trouble, so i'm all for shorter summer breaks.

When I was a kid we got out of school in mid-June and went back in early September, right after Labor Day. Now, it seems that they're letting the kids out earlier and but they're starting school long before Labor Day.
