You can't check your credit score for free, but you can check your credit report for free. You go to www.annualcreditreport.com (it's important to enter it correctly or you may give your info to identity thieves). Through that site you can get a report from each one of the three major credit reporting agencies for free. You can only get one free report from each reporting agency per year. I recommend spreading it out so you can check your credit report three times a year using a different company each time.
It is important to check your credit report to see if there are activities such as new loans or credit cards on there that you don't know about. If you find something that is not yours, your identity most likely has been stolen. In this time and age with identity theft so convenient, easy, and on the rise, credit monitoring is an essential tool to protect yourself from a major financial loss.

If you go to a financial institution for a loan on a home, the bank would run a check on your credit score because that is what they are interested in. They want to see what kind of risk you are. However, a credit score for a mortgage is a little different because it is geared toward a home loan. Mine actually turned out better than I thought it would.
Jonesy's advice about the credit reports from three major reporting agencies is correct, and spreading the three free ones out over the year is very good advice.

I think that you're allowed to check your credit for free once a year and I have done it twice. I printed out my whole credit report from online. You can even check it at two and three different credit bureaus.
I pay most of my bills online, too. I even bank online. I've never had any problems whatsoever.

The credit bureaus themselves offer that for free because of the law. But free credit report dot come and others want you to sign up for memberships that cost money. Be very careful to read everything before you download a report or you may find yourself sucked into a membership you don't want.

It's good to have credit if you can handle it in a responsible manner.
