An Obscenity

At a time when there is not enough food to go round in the world am I alone in finding something quite obscene about food eating competitions? Pasta, hot dog chili, burgers, ribs, the list goes on. The prize money is not inconsiderable and neither is the indigestion I should think. There is even an International Federation of Competitive Eating. Are you a competitive eater? Would you enter such a contest?

Hi p1kef1sh
I have never really thought about it like that but I am glad you have brought it to my attention and quite frankly I am quite disgusted by the thought, it does seem so wrong. I am clearly not a competitive eater and would certainly not enter such a competition, I don't think that many exist in England but I know it is big thing in America. I don't see the attraction of seeing someone stuffing food into their mouth against the clock until they litterally barff. I think a percentage of the winnings should go to starving countries however minimal it may be which would at least show some sort of compassion!

Yes it really is disturbing and goes to show that people don't really care that there are others suffering. Are people really that blinkered that they don't see what is going on around them or are they so greedy they don't care? I wish I knew the answer!

I'm not a competitive eater because that's just something I'm not cut out for doing so I would never enter a contest. But a funny story about that is at the Wisconsin state fair they have a cream puff eating contest. My mom decided to enter the contest not to win but to get a free cream puff. Instead of stuffing it down like all the other contestants were doing she sat up there savoring the cream puff and eating it slowly lol. It was pretty funny to watch. I think eating competitions can be kind of fun to watch but also gross that someone would eat so fast. People are starving in the world and I find your opinion to be very valid but at the same time I don't think that banning the competitons would be helpful at all to that cause. People are always going to waste food no matter what and there is little we can do to change that. It's really crazy that a competitive eating organization exists.

I'm not for banning things. Educate people away from it then the competitions will quietly go. Or better still, enable food to all those that need it. Then we can have as many food competitions as we like. I love the story about you Mom. I can just imagine it. Did she come last?

Yes, that's a very good idea. It's so sad that some people in the world starve. It reminds me how lucky I am to have a place to live and food to eat everyday. My mom did come in last lol. I'll never forget that story about her and I'm glad you liked it too.

I personally find it dis-tasteful (no pun intended). It just confirms my theory that there really isn't such a thing as scarcety in anything. It is just a fact that resources are disproportionately distributed among the worlds inhabitants.

I was gunna start another discussion but figured it would fit here as well in the food topic and wasting there off. What about the Olympics an the millions of dollars that go into that maybe even billions from all the countires even the countries that are "starving". Can you imagine the food and all the money that is wasted there? Should we stop the Olympics as well? Is not as gross as the One or two day event of those that like to make pigs of themselves. few hundreds or couple thousands for the pigout verses millions and billons of dollars for the Olympics and all the food that will be wasted there. hmmmm?

What since is there in a eating contest? What is the big deal of a bunch of people trying to see how fast they can consume something in record time? I don't think I would ever enter something so silly because I love tasting and savoring my food that I eat..With eating contest who has time to taste and enjoy? And yeah talk about indigestion later.. You feel as though you need to call the fire department to come put out the fire in your belly. It is a waste of food that can be donated to charities that care for children or sent to a homeless shelter atleast the food won't be wasted and it would feed many whereas with the contest maybe 6 will be eating.

It's disgusting even if there were'nt people starving. I encourages greed both for food and money and can't possibly be good for the health.

Nanna, I have to agree with you. I have always found food eating contests repulsive and asinine. Even if people weren't starving in other countries, the whole idea that someone could, or would gorge themselves like that makes me sick.

Wow, I never really thought of this until I read your post. I would never enter one of these because I can barely eat a plateful as it is. I can't imagine eating tons of this food at once. Shame on the competitive eating contests. They need to rethink their programs in this day and age..

Hello p1kef1sh,
I think is so disgusting when people do eating competitions and the amount of food that is wasted, there is no respect for food like you said there are so many people starving around the world so that is why I avoid programmes like that.

I am completely against this .. Such activity and organizations should be banned . It is completely inappropriate and disgusting . It makes me vomit and at the same time I feel sad for the people who stay hungry for days. This is extremely unfair and should be stopped.

As horrible as the contests are (IMO), I don't agree with =banning= them. The only harm is to the public aesthetic (& the possible harm some eaters may come to in their own bodies--but hey, THEY take the risk). We're still fairly free in this country, so that means we're free to do stupid, disgusting things, too. The key word here is CHOICE.
I choose not to watch or participate in this kind of low-class behavior.

I agree there are all these competitions for food eating, yet there isn't enough food to feed people. That seems a bit wrong. I am not a competitive eater. I don't think that I would enter an eating contest. I am personally night a big eater. So an eating competition wouldn't be right for me.

I doubt I would ever enter such a competition.
The bad feeling you get from overeating is too uncomfortable.
Besides I doubt I would ever win such a thing the way some other people eat.
What we need is an editor of the New York Times who would publish photos of hot dog eating competition winners next to photos of the slums of Zimbabwe.
That should do it.

I think its a terrible waste of food and highly rude to televise something like that when there is places& people going with out and less than what people consume in those contests.
I'd never compete in that sort of thing - I'd probably make myself sick!

Oh it makes me sick watching contest like that, people stuffing their faces, its sickening, I can't stand it. I don't think I would ever enter a contest like that, I'd get sick first..lol. Can you believe that there is a show on tv thats an eating contest, but its not how much you eat, its how much you can throw up after eating all that food, its disgusting to watch. I haven't watched it but I've seen previews of the show and I'm not watching it. I can't believe what stupid person out there came up with such a stupid show.

Hi well there is noway that I would be able to eat large amounts of anything.I like a little of this and a little of that.Portion control is a big thing with me,why have more on the plate than you may be able to eat, that is greed, and greed is a sin,so I can not equate o these competitions no,they are just a silly way to indulge yourself.
