I'm having an MRI of my knee today and I'm a bit nervous!

I am scheduled to go in at noon for an MRI of my right knee. I'm getting older and have other health issues, including arthritis, but this knee has been giving me a fit lately!
It feels like my knee and foot are twisting when I walk. I cannot fully straighten out that leg and it hurts when I bend it too far. I get stabbing pains in it like someone is repeatedly stabbing me with a knife. So my doctor has scheduled this MRI for today.
I'm a bit worried that it might be something that needs surgery. I'm not afraid of surgery; lord knows I've had enough of them in my lifetime! I just don't like the idea of not being able to walk for awhile, or even having to use crutches or a cane for awhile. I'm a busy person and have so much that I want/need to do!
Have you had something like this happen to you where it interfered with your life in a big way? How did you deal with it? Are there tricks to getting around after knee surgery? I have a large vegetable garden and things are getting ripe now so I have a busy schedule ahead of me!
Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!!!

Thank you, riyasam. The MRI went so smoothly that I actually fell asleep during it!
I wasn't worried about the MRI procedure because I've had one before on my shoulder. I'm worried about what they're going to find and that I might need surgery. I've already have over two dozen surgeries in my lifetime and I don't want any more! Especially on my knee because I'm such an active person. I have so many things to do and I don't know how I'm going to get around to do them if I'm on crutches or a cane. I should have some results by tomorrow, so we'll see what the next step is.

Sorry to hear that you are having such a problem with your knee. And being laid up isn't all that fun. But you will feel better after you get something done, even if it is surgery.
I was on a bus tour returning home from Branson, Missouri 7 years ago next month. We had left there about 45 minutes before and stopped in Shoney's to eat breakfast. I had just paid, turned around to tell a friend something, and my toe caught a bench they had at the end of the counter. It threw me up into the air, and I came down completely on my left side, breaking my hip. It totally tore me up, ball and all, so I had to have complete hip surgery. I only spent about 8 days on a walker, though. I was doing so good the day I went to the doctor to get the staples out that he told me to put the walker up and walk with my husband as much as possible. So that's what I did. We walked enough to get me up to 2 miles a day. It did take lots of exercise on the bed daily for about 2 months, but within a month, I was back to driving with no problems. And I'm still doing fine.
I've known lots of people who have had knee surgery. Some did great from the very start, not having to use crutches or walkers a long time. Others have taken longer to get well. The main thing is do what your doctor tells you to do and you'll be fine.

Well, guess what? I need surgery. I was given a referral to an orthopedic surgeon and told to make the appointment as soon as possible. I am also to wear a knee brace until I see the surgeon. I have a "tear". That's all they'd tell me.
So now my husband and I have bets going to see who gets to have their surgery first! LOL Just kidding.
He has his appointment with his surgeon on Aug. 27. Mine hasn't been made yet because it was too late to make the appointment by the time I got the referral. I think it would actually be better if he were to have his first because he will most likely heal faster than I will, so I can take care of him, then he can take care of me.
I'm not too upset, more annoyed than anything. I've had over 2 dozen surgeries in my lifetime and I had hoped the last one was my last. This will most likely be laproscopic surgery so it's no big deal. It's just so darned inconvenient!

Wow! What a horrible thing to have happen, Barb! I'm so sorry for you!
I know that the more you want to get better, the faster you will. I doubt it will take me long to be moving around at my old pace, so I'm just going to do what I can before surgery, if that's what they say I need.
I've already had cortisone shots in that knee, but they only help for about a month, then I need another one. The stabbing pains just started so, whatever it is, it's getting worse. I have a feeling I'll be told I need surgery.
I'll probably know by tomorrow. They told me that the report would be sent to my doctor within two days, so by tomorrow he should have it. I'm going to call him unless he calls me first.
I'll try real hard to do what the doctor's tell me. It's so hard to keep me down, though! LOL I came home from major abdominal surgery and started working again that very day. (I worked from home doing typesetting, so it wasn't strenuous.)
It's going to be a race between my husband and myself, though. I just took him in for a colonoscopy today because he's been suffering terribly with hemorrhoids for 2 months now. It looks like he's going to need surgery, too.
What a life, huh?

hi MW-I haven't had any probs like that fortuantly but my mum had a hip op ac few years ago and was unable to do anything or not meuch anyway being like you she got quite frustrated but her one consolation was that family were there to see her through the times she really needed help with cleaning cooking etc she was walking in 6mnths properly..truthfully I don't think there is a way round what you are told to do if you need surgery.bright blessings littleowl

It's times like that where you find out who really cares about you. It sounds like you have a great family, littleowl!
I breezed through the MRI. I fell asleep for a few minutes during it!
They said my doctor should have the report in two days, so by tomorrow I'll know more. Like you said, there's no way around it, so I'll just get busy doing what I can before I have to have surgery, if that's what they tell me.
Thank you for your concern, littleowl!

I have never had to have a surgery but i was in a car wreck once that broke my right hand and left foot. Yeah it was pretty funny watching me try to get around but I did it, and so will you. From what I have seen of you I can tell that you are the type of person that will find a way to do what you need to do no matter what. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you but I'm sure no matter what happens you will be fine. Keep us updated so we won't worry.

Hahaha! Thanks, freedom! I'll find a way, I'm sure. You've got me pegged, all right. I've come home after major abdominal surgery and gotten right back to work (I worked from my home doing typesetting at the time).
I had my heels operated on when I was 16. I had bursitis in both feet. People called me a duck because they said I was waddling like one, using crutches and having to walk on both feet so I couldn't 'hop'.
The MRI was so relaxing!!! This was one of those "open" kinds, unlike the "tin can" type I was in about 10 years ago for my shoulder. I didn't feel the least bit claustrophobic and actually fell asleep during the procedure!
My doctor should have the results by tomorrow, so I'll check with him then and let you know. Thanks so much for caring. It really means a lot to me.

I'm glad to hear it went well. They tried to put me in one of those closed things when I was younger...that didn't go too well. They had to give me a shot. I am way too fluffy up top to be getting squeezed into one of those things and it doesn't help that I am soooooo claustrophobic. I'll be looking for the update. I like you and would be pretty sad if something bad was to happen to you so stay tough.

This is a very unfortunate situiation that you are in. I personally have never had any surgery whatsoever but I do believe in the saying "whatever happens happens for a reason" and I also believe in whatever does not kill you makes you better spo although I might not have any tips for you maybe you can take heed into these two sayings!!!

I'd love to know what the reasons are, if everything happens for a reason. I've had 28 surgeries in my lifetime. That's way too many!
I was never a 'wild' person or mean or bad or anything like that, but having had surgery for cancer when I was 19 years old and almost dying made me really appreciate life and living! I've had a good attitude most of my life.
My mother always told me that things like this "build character". I'm already such a character that I don't need any more! I could give some away and still have more than enough left over!
Thank you for sharing those words of wisdom. It means a lot to me to know that there are so many caring people here in myLot!

Thank you, Brittanyh. It went well yesterday. Even though the MRI machines are VERY noisy (construction crew with jackhammer noisy) I managed to fall asleep for a few minutes!
It was actually very relaxing! I got headphones with music of my choice, and this was one of those "open" kinds of machines that aren't nearly as bad as the kind that look like big tin cans!
I should know by tomorrow what the results are. My doctor should have the report by then. We shall see.

I had knee surgery a couple of years ago and it's one of the best things I've ever done. The MRI is the easiest part! I just had some laproscopic work done, so my recovery period was only a couple of weeks, which was great. I was back to normal activity within a month or two.
Hopefully, the MRI will show something easy to fix! I'd suggest practicing your hopping now.

I'm sure I'll be happy once this darned knee is fixed! I've already have many surgeries in my life, but I just don't want to have to slow down!!! I have too many things that I want or need to do!
The MRI went smoothly. I fell asleep during it!
I had laproscopic work done on my shoulder years ago. My arm had fallen off. Well, not quite... I'm exaggerating a bit here. I had a torn rotator cuff, a frozen scapula, dislocated shoulder, etc., etc., etc. I couldn't believe it! I couldn't remember ever injuring it! But the surgery fixed me up as good as new!
Oh, I've almost got the hopping part down! Thanks for the warning.

Hello my friend... How's your knee? Been away from myLot for a while,it was just now that I saw this discussion on my email. Hope you're doing well. Hmm... I had an accident when I was on the 3rd grade, my left knee was cut open from a broken glass center table. It was deep. 3 layers I think, 30 stitches. After that I couldn't walk for a while. And after a week or two, I slowly tried to walk, not forcing it but at least try to bend it little by little. The hardest part was bending it. Hehe. Eventually it got right back on track. But somehow, it changed the way I walk. Up to now. Hehe. Don't force it, just take it one step at a time, little by little until it fully recovers. Hope it doesn't get in your way, like what you said, you have a lot of activities ahead of you. God bless! Take care!

I was wondering where you've been! So many people are disappearing from myLot for weeks at a time these days. Maybe it's vacations, maybe it's summer burnout. I don't know.
Anyway, I'm glad to see you're back.
My knee has a "tear" in it. That's all I could get out of my doctor's office. I've been referred to an orthopedic surgeon with instructions to wear a knee brace until then. We shall see!
I bet your accident was painful... especially since you were so young! Thirty stitches is a lot of stitches! My son cut his head open on a corner of a table when he was about that same age and all he got was one stitch!
If I do need surgery, and it certainly looks that way, it will most likely be laproscopic surgery, so there will only be a small hole or two in my knee. I'm not too worried because I've had lterally dozens of surgeries before. I'm used to it, but I don't like it.
I'll just scoot around on my butt if I have to!

Hehe. I was really busy with my life. Yeah, it was painful, 3 layers of stitches... it was pretty deep. But luckily I recovered fast. So your operation turned out well? I'm glad. Hope it gets well soon. Anyway, I'll be away from myLot for a long time. This would be my last day for now. I'll be missing you, my friend! Take care always.

Thanks for your encouragement, loulou! I had the MRI and all went very well. So well, in fact, that I fell asleep during the procedure!
They told me the report should be at my doctor's in two days, which will be tomorrow. I'll know more then. I hope it can be fixed easily! I've had that "keyhole" or laproscopic surgery before on my shoulder, so I know how that goes and it's not so bad.
Guess I'll just get really busy right now so I can get as much done as I can before I have to slow down some. I just don't like the thought of having to slow down!
