Can anyone tell me why the cost of fixing your car is so expensive? is it because they feel like it's not a do it yourself kinda deal so they can charge whatever? i know its not the cost of parts because they pay minimal and charge so much for them (i fixed my own brake line and it cost me 75 bucks for parts, whereas i had an estimate of 450 dollars at the local shop) and it's all on labor (79.99 an hour is the cheapest around i found). Anybody else feel like getting something fixed and then bringing it somewhere else telling them u need the same job done and seeing if they do it? my buddy did that and the mechanic at the place got fired lol. i may try it myself

Its the same with household repairs... if you dont have the knowledge/skills to fix it and the other guy does, you dont have a lot of choice but to pay up if you want to get the thing working again. You're paying for his skills as well as for his time (& probably for his holiday home, sports car, home entertainment system...) If you're not in a huge hurry, its worth getting a couple of estimates/quotes. I try to find people who've done a good job for someone I know.
