I really don't feel like going in to work today, I called the manager of the store I am supposed to work in and told him I didn't feel well, he asked what was wrong and I told him I couldn't come in cause I was dead.
Of course then he told me that I couldn't possibly be dead becasue I was calling him, to which I promptly responded that I had come down with a case of the 24 hour dead condition and was not going to be able to make it in.
Then he said I will see you at 3. uggg At least I get points for trying right?
What excuses have you used to get out of work?

I've called in hung over before. I just told my boss I can come in and be worthless or I can stay home and be worthless. I didn't have anything pressing that day, so I just took a personal day.

I've always found that honesty is the best policy, so don't stary lieing now!! I do know that once my sister said her son was sick when she called off work. Well, the next day he was VERY sick. She never did that again!

i'm working at a BPO and there are a lot of people in the floor who do the same work as me, so a missing person a day will not be much of a liability to the company except during tax seasons (when almost everyone has to work more than 12 hours). few of my officemates, they are being asked to take doctor's prescriptions and come half of the day.
whenever i call, and a supervisor would tell me he/she will not approve my leave because mine's not a valid reason, i'd just say, "i won't file that as paid leave, anyway. whether you approve it or not, i won't force myself to come to work. i don't want a negative service issue (where the company pays a lot for every content errors), i'm sure you don't like that too." i heard from few of my officemates that they are being asked to take doctor's prescriptions and come half of the day. worse, they require you medical certificate if you wanted to file it as paid leave.
we have this policy that you need to call every time you'll be absent. thus, if you're confined to a hospital, you have to call daily until you're discharged finally. you have to give notice during the whole duration of your sickness. and only one week of our advance notice or vacation leaves are approved. sometimes, only 2 days. and it's never really likely to call your manager when you wanted to leave work, because no reason is valid for them. they're so annoying that sometimes even if i so not wanted to come to office, once i think about talking to any of them, i'm always changing mind almost instantly.

I hate jobs like that. My last job was just like that. I worked in a call center so it is hard to work if you have a toothache or lose your voice. But they still want you to come into work. I don't often call out of work, I just called yesterday to see what he would say to it hehehe.

Family emergency. It always works. A co-worker of mine used it a few times before and it has gotten her out of going in for her shift. She never has to explain exactly what was happening, either. Seems like a way better excuse to me than just being sick. Most jobs expect you to work while sick anyway.

i am a workaholic. ther are times when i go to work even if i am sick. that really was difficult but i try to keep on.
but there are times when i am really sick and can't get off from my bed. i do try to call my boss, just like you, and tell him i cannot make it. after explaining everything, he still wanted me to go to work. ofcourse, i won't listen to him. i just stay at home and get some rest i needed. by the time i went back to work, i saw his frowning face the whole day.

I am sorry to hear that! I was just calling to poke fun at the manager of the store that I was supposed to be covering for, I thought it was funny so i posted about it hehehe. It's too bad that your boss feels that way and treats you that way when you are truly sick.

Good try, lol at least you have a good sense of humor and points for trying. I have never called off sick from work, unless I was really sick. Although I do know a couple of the guys that have 'called off sick' for the next day! WOW, didn't know that I was also working with psychics lol.

It's amazing isn't it? I wasn't really trying to call off of work I had already promised to go into that store to cover a shift, I was just more poking fun at the manager of that store hehehe. I also wrote him a note one day about these talking monkeys that we have and he laughed so hard he kept a copy of it on his desk in the office lol. I try to have as much fun as posible wherever I work!

well, i've been a manager in my previous work and i've heard all sorts of excuses. from the valid ones up to the real outrageous ones. as a manager, i'm pretty lenient when people ask for day-offs but i do set a line. right now in my present work, i'm part of management and usually, people look for me when they can't report for work. they give a lame excuse and right off the bat, i know that they're lying through their teeth. i just tell them to make sure to "get well" so that they can report for work the next day.

No excuses, go to work!
Once an emplyee called me, as the acting supervisor, to tell me he was sick as a dog and couldn't come to work that night. In the background you could definitely hear the music and people loudly having a party! I gave him the night off, because he was my friend, otherwise I would have chewed his butt and told him to leave that party and come to work
Guess your manager didn't have that great a sense of humor

I know people who regularly call in saying they have 'eaten something' which has given them a bad stomach...its usually a hangover! I also heard of someone who said he had to take time off to visit his sister who'd just had a baby. He gave the name and weight of the baby, the town he was going to etc and accepted all the congratulations on becoming an uncle - before setting off for a weekend away... he didnt have a sister.
I think your boss should have given you the day off ..... instead I see he thought it would be more appropriate to give you the 'graveyard' shift!

I think my creativity should have earned me a day off, apperantly the manager of that store didn't feel the same way. You would think he would have apperciated the laugh it gave him at the very least!! I am covering a shift for him, cause the person that was supposed to work his store tonight did call off LMAO!!!

Being in management I often get people phone in with excuses, and some of the best have been 'I am stuck out on the island and the next boat back is not for 3 days' and 'We have had a tree come through our front room window'
Both were by the same person and completely true.
Most of the excuses though are sickness/diarroeah (we have a 48 hr clearance policy being a children's day nursery, headaches/migraines (9 out of 10 times is hangover, as I find out they have been out the night before) and no sleep at all as 3 of them are mums to babies.
The best genuine one I had was the bath had overflowed, doing all my electrics and I had to wait in for the electrics to be sorted out. They were done after an hour, but I stayed off all day.
