One who knows their subject well and can communicate with enthusiasm to inspire interest in that subject. They also need to be able to spot the children who are struggling and have the patience to help and encourage them by explaining in different ways - whilst also being able to extend the more able pupils. They shouldn't judge their pupils (other than by their ability/achievement in the subject) or have 'favourites'. A good teacher needs to be able to control what's going on in the classroom without having to resort to threats or anger. They need to be prepared to work far longer hours than the public give them credit for and be able to co-operate with children/parents/colleagues and other professionals. Pretty tall order eh? yet there are loads of such people out there (thankfully!)
