I've been wondering why students hate math. Any idea?

hi eunife, I'm an engineering student and I find that most students hate math because they lack the perseverance and patience to find the answers or solutions.some mathematical solutions have different ways of solving and most of them are trial and error and once you make a mistake on one part you'll be wrong in the whole. It's frustrating because if you always fail to get the answers the first few times people feel automatically that they can't do it and that it's hard... hehe at least that's what most of my friends say when they knew I was going to be in engineering but hey I'm on my graduating year yay I braved it through just a few more mos. and I'm home free..

I love math and i am even a tutor. However, After years of tutoring, I can offer some insight. I have been told and I think the reason why people seem to hate math are the WORD problems are hard. or SPATIAL RELATIONS. i CAN TELL YOU FOR THE LONGEST TIME- I could NOT see the spatial shapes that a box with dotted lines would look like. I loved Algebra equations, but the word problems were not fun! This goes hand in hand with Chemistry and Physics and Geometry and Calculus In the past, there was not the internet and all kinds of tutorials .. nor is the motivation there. (to most they seem hard) and if they do not understand the terms at first ..all is lost The biggest thing that I found, 'afraid to be called on" if they are NOT doing well in class. Afraid to forget the formulas. they say, we can look out answers up and use the formulas and have examples. why is it cheating if we have formulas on the test it we can demonstrate our understanding better. Can they at least be put on the board? See what i am saying?

In my opinion, the core of algebra is solving word problems. When a student learns how to translate worded situations into math equations, that, i think, is the time that he really understands math. This is the difference of algebra and arithmetic. You learn the 'hows' of the basic operations in arithmetic, but it is in algebra that you learn when to use them. it's easy to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. But is it easy to determine when to use them and why? It is algebra that teaches us the logic of using the basic operations that we learn in arithmetic. Moreover, formulas are models of worded situations. In my opinion, and from my experience, i don't want students to have a copy of their formulas during exam bec. that makes their learning process a memorization instead of analysis. We teach how to analize in our math subjects and not to memorize the formulas. A student should be able formulate equations from a given situation. And if a student understood how or why a particular formula looks like how it looks, he doesn't need a copy to recall it. He should be able to write it from the problem he is solving.

Personally, I think it is because students were brought up with the idea that Math is difficult because that is how it is being projected in tv and radio medias. If only students will know that math is already part of their system then they will not think of it as a hard subject. A simple counting in math, buying something is math and dividing things is also math. For students to loved math, they must learn the importance of it and not terrorize them in teaching it. Apply games or tricks that will help them to learn it easily.

because it is difficult and hard to understand,l love it.but when i read the math books i will don't read it again.because it is too difficult to understand,it will cost me a lot of time to understand it.and i don't have enough time to read it,and i also want to waste time on it. could you tell me a way to undertand it ,and the waste of time is useful for me to study math. i am chinese.

I don't think math books are for you to read. They are not novels. The math books always have exercises in them. They are in there not to be read but to be done. Working on exercises, referring to similar examples help a lot.

Most students hate math because it is hard for them to understand. I was never good in math and just dreaded it. The teachers were more interested in getting through the books and catered to the few studenta that were good and cought on fast. I was always left behind. I went into high school with absolutely no algebra background and still dont know any. At fifty two I am going back to school in two weeks taking basic math and english, my 2 worst subjects. I am and am not looking forward to it as I still dont learn any easier..
