How would one train like an athlete or a warrior?

I want to know what it takes to train like a world class athlete? Basically I do not want to exercise like a "regular exerciser". I want to push my self to higher limits. Currently I am a little overweight I am 5'5 160lbs but I go to the gym 4-5 days a week sometimes 3. I basically do 30 minuet workouts on the machines and I lift a little.
This seems like typical regular exercise for the regular exerciser.
I was thinking how I could actually push myself to the limits as an athlete/warrior? Like for instance recently I have been doing 20 mins on the elliptical then 20 mins on the treadmill. That doesn't seem good enough. I am also a vegetarian but I get a good amount of calories like 1500-2000 daily.
I workout 4-5 and sometimes 3 days a week.
Should I up this to 6 days a week rest seven? Go to the gym before work then after work? Also it is said doing the same exercise won't help you lose weight but if you are running on a treadmill burning up calories how is that possible since calories are being burned? I just want to train hard and I want to run faster and longer as well like a track running athlete.
