Beauty is only skin deep. One very intriguing line. But who really is the authority when it comes to beauty? What is beauty? When is a person considered beautiful? Does it have something to do with flawless skin or is it more than that? What is your concept of beauty? Do you consider yourself beautiful?

Good question,
I think we have a tendency to allow the media set the standard on what is beautiful. Then the whole world tries to conform to it. But not all of us can. Then sometimes you will (or at least I do) look at a man or a woman who you don't consider attractive at all but they have a husband/wife or partner who truely adores them. For me, it makes me realize that what is true is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So even if I don't find someone attractive, my opinion really doesn't matter.
Sometimes beauty to me is aesthetic and other times it has much more to do with a persons inner self. The physical aspect of beauty is only temporary. It can change with time or accident.
Sometimes I think I'm beautiful; other times, I am my worst critic.

I agree with the statement that beauty is skin deep but this doesn't mean that outer appearances aren't important. If your outer appearance is beautiful this adds to you internal beauty of your character and personality. It is true that if someone is beautiful but has got a very repulsive personality, this will serve as an obstacle that sort of blocks her/his outer beauty. Beauty of the soul and body both complement each other and are both important in today's world.

beauty lies in the eye of beholder... everybody has a very different opinion on what beauty is.. some feel its just flawless skin while others feel it is healthy skin and for others it is fair skin. i personally feel a person is beautiful when he or she has a healthy skin.

My mother always taught me that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No matter the skin color or their features or their hair color. People are beautiful no matter what they appear to be on the outside. I know at times that I am a beautiful person but also at times I can be a very ugly person. Anyone who thinks that beauty is only skin deep(not saying you are one of them)it is my opinion that they are vein, self centered, and ignorant. Not everyone has the perfect hair or skin or well, anything. But there is beauty in everyone. It is in their thoughts, their good deeds, their selflessness. That is my opinion.

Beauty right now in today's standards is more of a society's view... We were raised under the influence that skinny people in magazines are SEXY. That people with incredibly blond hair and sparkling blue eyes are BEAUTIFUL. This a concept in society that i slowly being changed but since this is what we grew up with it is hard to erase it from your mind. However beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. We have latinas(JLO,salma hayek, Penelope cruz), ebonies(halle berry, tyra banks, beyonce), and asian(Lea Salonga, Lucy Liu,) women who are beautiful. We have thick people who can show that they are sexy(Queen latifah for example is a very sexy thick lady). for me I think that a person can be beautiful if she can be confident in herself and believe that she is beautiful no matter what other people say... Bcause once she has confidence in herself then she can present herself to anybody with her head held high and say... "I'm gorgeous and there's nothing you can do about it"... lolz

As far as I am concerned, beauty is determined by far more than physical appearance alone. I have come across many people that would be classed as beautiful in a physical sense yet their personality and attitude immediately renders them very unattractive! Beauty definitely does come from within and is expressed by who we are inside just as much as how we look outside. And no I do not consider myself beautiful! (Or handsome I guess seeing as I am a male). But I do consider myself to be a good person.

peace be upon you
first of all this is a good topic to discuss , every one has his different concept of beauty , so we can't be ok about a single form of beauty , but no one can deny the fact that a person with good morals and behaviors is the most beautiful .
thanks for this topic

Beauty is an accumulation of nice qualities and that can be physical or mental.
Some people are only physically beautiful while others have no physical beauty but possess an accumulation of good qualities that makes others very appreciative of them.
Hence the expression, beauty is only skin deep.

Very nice discussion Apparently the only thing I could say is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you feel beautiful then you are you shouldn't care about what other say because for me feeling good makes you look good

I agree that beauty is only skin deep. It just means that beauty is in the eye of the beholder in my opinion. There are many different ideas of beautiful to many people. Some people view others in another way then someone else might.
I don't think that I am beautiful but my husband must see something in me, because he says that I am. Beauty can have all kinds of definitions. I think it can be about one's attitude toward life and a person's personality traits. No one can be totally flawless or perfect.

Beauty to me would be a good personality. Sometimes you could have the most beautiful person on the outside and yet when they speak nothing comes out but ugly things and this ruins thier whole persona because now they've become the exact opposite beautiful. Beauty also is when good things just come naturally, they don't have try to be a good person because it just comes natural. That's my idea of beauty.

Hi diutay, you are, i think, partially correct. But beauty is a combination of both mental(inner) and physical(outer). Putting emphasis on one of those, i think, not shows a complete picture. And concept of beauty differs from person to person. So, relax and think what attracts you and accordingly behave. If to you, physical beauty is all important, it's fine, go ahead and take care of physical beauty but don't ignore your inner beauty too and vice versa.

Hi diutay,
When they say beauty is only skin deep is that person is beautyful only in looks but has very bad personalty and when a person has nice personalty they may not be beutyful on the out side, to me if you have lovely personalty you are beautyful inside and outside.
