Should mothers be allowed to care for their babies while in jail?

I watched a program on this one time. A jail (can't remember which one) allows inmates to give birth and take care of their babies in a "nursery" until they are a certain age. I have mixed feelings on this one. Being a mother, I know how important those first months are for mother and child. Yet, what in the world are you doing in jail while pregnant to begin with?? Also, how safe would it be to raise your baby in that environment? What do you think about this?

I think it would depend on why they are in there... So females pop kids out like nothing flat others are in jail and was not truely their fault or just made a bad discission!

You're very right about that. Every person has a different story. One female that they interviewed had 9 kids at home. That is so sad!

sure as hell they should be. i personally don't think jails are not for kids babies need to be close to their mothers it doesn't matter if the mom is a convict there are jails in india which allow mothers to raise their children to a certain age

True. It isn't the child's fault that their parent ended up in jail. I can see both sides.

I agree with the fact that babies should be with their mothers.

I agree to let mothers give birth & have their babies with them while theey are in jail. That way they can have that mother feeliing & the bbabies can feel close tto there m om.

mothers in jail - mothers in jail shouldnt have there child in jail..
I have very mixed feeligns about this..Like for the first 4 mths maybe..but then they start to crawl..and talk and walk..and they need to be free..what kind of an environment is a jail nursery?? The mother did a crime..why cant a family memeber watch the child till the mother gets out? And have visitations? That would be the most sensible choice dont you think? It would be selfish to keep a child from loved ones and the world because a mother made an aweful mistake..why more or less punish the child? Ikm swinging more to no.,.i dont think so..

You sound like me. Very mixed emotions. I honestly don't know the "rules" or how it works, maybe that would help me to decide whether I feel that it's right or wrong. Thanks for responding!

I think the baby should stay with his mom till the age of 2 only..before that it will be unfair to the baby to be deprived of his mom.. and after that it won't be a healthy environment for him to grow in

I, unfortunately, don't think that this is a very good idea. While yes, the mother-child bond is very important, I don't think it is more important than a baby's right to a normal life. I just don't think jail is the right environment or the right start to life.

The first months for a mother and child are very important, but what if the mother is in jail for years to come..and the baby had to be given up for adoption? I don't think that it would be good for a child to be dragged away from his mom after a few months. Even if the mom wasn't in jail for long, chances are she isn't stable enough to care for a child if she ended up in jail in the first place, and her child could eventually be taken away by social services.

Another post on here mentioned something about inmates that were serving less than 18 months? I really can't remember what the program said. I totally agree with what you're saying. Thanks!

Yes. Mothers should be allowed to care for their child in the Jail at least until the child is 2 years old. Motherhood is a right to enjoy I feel. Just think no one is a born Criminal. Only circumstances make them one.

Should that right be taken away in a circumstance like this? Believe me, I'm sure every one of those mothers have a different story as to why they're in there in the first place. I don't really agree or disagree but I wonder...what were they thinking to end up in this situation to begin with?

Absolutely not! I understand the concept, of mothers and babies being together- but I do not agree. To be honest, I hadn't heard of it before, but it sickens me. First of all- that is no place for a baby. It simply isn't. Second if a mother is in jail- she did something to get there. Maybe she should've been thinking of her baby before she did the illegal act. Apparently at that time, being a mom wasn't so important.

what ive heard is that the moms are only allowed to care for their child if they will be let out of jail before the child is 18 months so that it can have a close bond to its mother. i approve ans dont you think a woman that would take the time to take care of their child wouldnt put their own and other children in danger in the jail.

I'm not sure. I would think that every situation would have to be handled differently. Their reason for being in jail, mostly. I guess the issue I'm having isn't so much if it's safe, it's more so that it bothers me to think that someone who is pregnant would even put themselves in that position to begin with. Even though, like I said, I don't know each and every one of their personal stories.

Personally i dont see a problem with it. I would think it is a very safe environment because alot of the women there have been mothers at one time, or want to be mothers at some time and wouldent do anything to harm the child or its mother. I think it is great.

I would like to think that it would be safe. I don't know, I'm kinda having a hard time with the thought of a baby being raised in jail. It just bothers me. On the other hand, I know that's it's a very good thing for the child to be with it's mother. Thanks for responding!
