Wat do ul think abt this..
In the episode which shows Richard comin to meet John wen he was a Kid, it is evident tat he wants to make sure if John remembers his past life.. Richard is amazed nd happy wen he sees the picture drawn by John(a stick figure attackd by a black pillar of smoke).. among the items tat Richard shows John and asks him which of them belongs to him, there is a small glass container containg sand, could it be the sand from the Island, Could John originally be an inhabitant of the Island??
In the finale wen John finally comes to the Others, Richard says 'Welcome Home'..
I think John was one of the original inhabitants of the island(in his past life)..
Also could Richard be related to John in neway( Father Son relationship??).. but then therez Anthony Cooper.. or mayb it was all part of the con.. Anthony Cooper is not his father..
which makes me think... in the 1st season, Jack finds the decomposed bodies of a male nd female in the cave... who are they?... i cant remember wat he found in their pocket?... can som1 refresh my memory?... wat is the significance of the game backgammon in all this... John is very gud at it... a real mind twister isnt it??...

I think that that scene was a flash back and not a flash forward.
Richard was there in the episode that explained how Ben came to be on the island, and he was the same age then as well. Its all linked to how time works on the island I think (although I expect that the show will prove me wrong).
His "welcome home" was more of a comment on Locke being in his rightful place as a believer in what goes on on the island, than a comment on the fact he had been there before.
Backgammon - that's just a plot device to show that Locke is good at thinking ahead and on his feet, much like Ben.

I am not caught up, I'm almost at the end of the 3rd season so perhaps I haven't seen this part yet. I do wonder a lot about John's supposed background because it is so confusing. I mean he claims that he has met his parents but he was raised in foster care - so were those really his parents? Anthony Cooper/Tom Sawyer was also the con who killed Sawyer's parents as well as crippled John until he arrived at the island.
I did notice during part of the third season some flash forwards - so I do know at least a few people make it home and off that island. I don't think it was so good for one of them, well two since one of them is in a coffin but of course I don't know WHO lol.
I believe Jack found a key? I thought that's what they were looking for too. The backgammon may have just been a fluke, I mean not many people claim to have a game afternoon anymore and play board games, but if you have nothing to do, the folks that are good at things like this will emerge.

What you said may be true... since for and in the island... nothing is impossible... all the questions we have will be answered in the final three seasons of lost... and hopefully we will not be disappointed...
I sometimes even think that the father of Jack was once an inhabitant or was ones lost in the island... but anything can happen in this series...
