No she does not eat her own poop, but she sure love other dogs' poops. How do stop her? I have tried scolding her, but failed.

my late shihtzus used to do that. i think they all do. it is natural for them. i just used to watch them closely and try to keep them away from the poop after they do it. as soon as they poop, i move them fast elsewhere or i pick it up fast and throw it in the trash before they get at it. u fast to watch them, they are like babies. they will put anything in their mouths.

ya, you must watch them very closely. Once you look away, they put some thing in their mouth!

haha my last dog did that too but i dident do a thing becuse my vet said that it dosent matter, its even pretty good becuse then they get the minerals they dident get the last time. So it dont matter so much but you might think its not so fresh when you cuddle with her

haha, my dog does that to. though she usually eats her own poop. i really do not know what to do with her. my friend suggested that i put chili flakes on the poop so that she will burn her tongue and not eat her poop anymore.
i have yet to do that because i dare not hurt my precious puppy. but if that is the only way, then i guess i have to do it.
i'm still looking for some alternatives, though

I'd suggest only walking her in areas that have been scooped. We've had dogs that were poop eaters and nothing worked. I remember trying pineapple and a handful of supplements that were safe and supposed to prevent it, but I had no luck. It's an instinctual thing to 'clean up' after other dogs, and it's very difficult to fight that. Prevention is about the only fool proof thing.
Yuck!

Yep alot of dogs do this cause to them it smells of fantasic things,i had a jack russel a while back that enjoyed horse and cow poo, maybe if you know your going to a poohie area you could put him on a long lead,im not sure chilli would help, wouldnt he think he just had a bad tasting pile and go on and look for another pile, also wouldnt he smell there was something strong in the poo, personally id rather he ate the poo than burnt his mouth some breeds have uber sensitve mouths :)

My dog used to have the bad habit of eating the cat's poop. We all found it an unsettling habit, even the cat. This is yet another reason we don't let dogs lick our faces...
Anyway, we were able to solve our problem by moving the cat box and scolding if he went after it. We also would add a little salt to his food once in awhile (a friend told me that a lack of salt or minerals could cause them to turd-burgle).
Mostly I'd say just keep her away from the poo if you can, or invest in doggie breath mints.
Good Luck.

Hello orangcina;
Coprophagia (as it is called) was first believed to be the result of poor diet, poor health, or pancriatic enzyme deficiancy. However, this condition is not uncommon in female dogs, expecially if they are nursing newborn pups. It their way to show the little ones how to basically, clean themselves, and once they've learned this, the condition generally goes away.
However.....if your dog is not pregnant, or nursing, then she is suffering from bordom and seeks more attention. It is harder to cure this condition if it becomes a habit, and disipline won't help.
Keep your dog on a leash at all times while out, and constantly supervise her activity. Eventually she will gradually lose interest. The good news is, eating her own feces won't hurt her. If you can't seem to get her to stop, then take her to the vet.
All the best of luck.

I have found that if you feed them canned food they are more apt to eat the poop because it smells like the food. If you feed dry food it is less likely happen. Also there are products you can buy to feed them so thet their poop tastes (even more!) unpleasant. This is supose to break them. This apparently is a very common thing. The worste part is it will make them throw up and if you keep them in the house and they are throwing up poop.... OMG! gross gross gross. who wants to clean that up? eww. anyway.. Good LUck!!

there is a vitamin in the pet stores but i can recall the name of it sorry to say but if u go to pet smart or to one of those stores and tell them u are looking for a vitamin for the dog im sure they can help you... you see most dogs are lacking some vitamin which makes them do this and while it is disgusting in nature they cant help it most of my dogs did this too i was a dog breeder for 20 years and then i found the answer so dont give up hope ok?
