So... we recently had to reformat our computer and start from scratch. the only real problem we've encountered since then is that we have no sound. we've already checked the speakers, volume settings, all that. really the only clue i have to why it isn't working is when it first starts up i get an error message stating that there is no sound device. any help/ideas are appreciated.

Welcome to mylot and happy posting here.
Ok it means you need to get the sound card driver.
I did this once and got an error saying no sound card detected I hope it's the same.
If you know which make is your sound card you can get the driver like mine was realtek HD Audio Driver.

when you reformatted you computer you lost all the drivers for the system. What you will need to do is goto the manufacture of the soundcard / computer and get the drivers for the sound card. Once you install the drivers the sound card should work fine

Depending on the brand of your system and sound card you can go to the website and redownload the driver. I had to do this with a few systems and one of them I had to go to realtek.com to get the right driver.
Good luck and happy myLotting!
