square watermelons - Melons grown in Japan
Yes, that is exactly how they do it. They place the fruit into a square lucite box whil it is still growing on the vine and the fruit grows into the shape of the box. I heard about this a couple of months ago. I also heard from one responder on Mylot that the melons cost about $80 to buy because they are mostly grown for souveniers bought by tourists.

Hi ya bebersvans I would think you are right in saying that they grow them in some sort of box so as they grow they take that shape but what I want to know is, why?

I saw this in the news. I think it's a super idea, sure would save on space in the fridge!! I read that they have a special clear container that they put the watermelon in when it's really little, then as it grows it fills up the space and comes out square. (I don't remember if the container was glass or plexiglass) You're right, it's the same as when you put a pear in a bottle, or I've seen it done with pumpkins, where you put the tiny pumpkin in and as it grows it takes on the shape of a face or something. Really neat idea, isn't it?!

They must grow it in a square container and it takes on that shape. I think they are pretty neat. I bet they would be a alot easier to cut. I would really like to see one somethime. I like watermelon it is one of my favorite fruits. Honeydew melon is also good. That is a favorite also.

It might be a GM thing. I know they've been trying to grow straighter bananas so they can fit more in a box so it might be something like that. I agree that they look totally cool though. Have you asked the guy on the other site where he read about it? He might be able to give you some more information or a link to a news item or something.
