Have you ever thought of writing a novel or a book?

Every time I read a novel, especially a good one, my desires to write a novel becomes greater. But to realise this dream of writing a novel is easier said than done. Anyone in MyLot who has written a novel and published it? Or is there any advice or experience with regards to writing a novel that you wish to share?

every time i read a classic novel, it inspires me to write. when i was reading Lord of the Rings Fellowship, i stopped in the middle of the book to write my first novel. tolkien inspired me to write. i wrote the first draft in one year, played with it and edited it for 2 years, designed the cover and decided to publish on lulu.com
writing is stressful and a lot of work. i often went to the gym to destress after i write.
my advice...Just Do It...for the first draft, just keep on writing whatever comes to your mind, even if some stuff sounds like crap. you will edit the junk out in editing. and some junk might turn out to be good.
now i am working on a graphic novel which is more work and more headache.

Thanks for the advice. oh yah, I've written some stories, bits and pieces, and sometimes I feel what I produced isn't good enough, so I didn't dare to show it to my friends for a comment.

that is what i used to think when i was younger...maybe i am not good enough. but the main reason i decided to go for it was because many people who dont even know each had kept telling me that they liked my writing style and my writing is entertaining. so i decided if so many people like my writing style, i want to entertain others as well and make a career out of it if i can.
maybe put your stuff on blogs and ask people to comment for feedback...if you get lots of positive comments on it, go for it...

Come to think of it, posting my stories on blog for others to judge would be a good idea, since most of them don't know what I look like, so I might feel less embarassed. Thanks for the tips! Happy writing to you too!

I have written a book and I am in the process of editing it. I hope to have it published.
Here is an idea, why not start by writing short stories just for your own enjoyment. Share them with friends. Use this as a tool to develop your skill and confidence and to find your voice or style.
I have started several more stories since finishing my book. It helps me keep my interest and develop ideas for what I hope will be a new book.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to write more short stories to brush up my writing skill. I usually write articles which is more factual in my line of work, so I'm not used to writing fiction, but I've always wanted to write a novel.
Do you mind telling me whether you get yourself an editor to edit your manuscript or an agent to help publish it for you, or not? If you do, how can I look for one and how do I know if the agent is reliable?

I am just at the point of editing. I was searching for an editor, but I didn't like the cost. Someone (on myLot) suggested I edit it myself. So that is what I'm doing. I already decided to self-publish, so I can be of much help when it comes to this type of advice. But there are some experienced writers here on mylot that have given me a lot of helpful suggestions. Maybe make it a new discussion.

I have written seven novels altogether and the main thing I have to share is how difficult they are to write. Novels are very long, typically from 60-120k words, and are complex to plot. I have tried different methods to plot and also keep track of details (otherwise I might forget, for example, what colour eyes one of my characters has. I haven't come up with an ideal solution yet.
Typically it takes me about a year to write a novel. If it is something you want to do, go for it and give it a go but be aware you will need lots of stamina and that it won't be easy.

If you don't mind, can you tell me some of the titles that you've published. I might be one of your potential readers too!

I have, but I don't think it would turn out the way I had planned, lol. I stick to screenplays and short stories right now because that's more of a comfort zone for me. But who knows, ten years from know I may be writing my first book. I don't even know any stories that could possibly be enjoyed everywhere. I like crime/film noir stuff so maybe I'll think about it.

Thanks for sharing your personal experience. But there's no one-size-fits-all story. So I don't think any author can write a story that could be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. Mostly will get a target group of readers.

Most of the novels I've read are very simple stories of every day life, so it makes me think writing a novel can't be that hard. I would suggest keeping a journal of story ideas and of interesting events or people that come into your life. When you have an idea for a story, start writing whether it's good or bad. Proof read your work and edit where necessary. After you've finished, send your work to a publisher. And don't be discouraged if you're turned down. I think most people are at first. If this is where you passion is, you're probably suppose to be a writer.

In my opinion writing a novel is a result of a certain condition. The specific condition means we have enough experience or knowledge. Experience differ greatlt from person to person. May be it is love, hate, horror, politics, law etc etc. After that we need a deep thought and feeling about it. It is a combination of experience and thought and feeling that makes us posses material to write novel. Besides we need technical skills in language, especially writing. So it is a slow process. But it is hard to tell how slow since it is different to each person.
In my case, I wrote and I have published two non fiction books in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) about tourism. Today I prepare a novel on Indonesian politics.

I've written several books, actually...I do it all the time because writing's my obsession, my addiction, and what keeps me sane. Whether they're any good..*shrugs*
I have published exactly one, though. I did it via lulu, self-publishing. I had help with the art and the editing -- friends of mine, and it was pretty difficult and mind-boggling. It's not currently on the market, 'cause I've had issues with the PDF file and all that, but most people don't have as much of a problem.
My advice is to keep determined, if it's something you really want then you can definitely do it.

I am always wanting to write a book, but although I get lots of ideas, I think mine are more the short story. When I read a book, sometimes I feel that I could write it better, especially if the book is disappointing. At the moment I am writing a short story, mainly for me so I doubt it will ever be published.
I think that if you have the desire and the ideas for a book or story then you should do it. I am not sure if there is any right or wrong way to go about it, but I would just get it down on paper as it comes to you and then put it together after.

I don't write novels, but I have had a book published, Cat-House Sonnets, 100 poems celebrating cats. Check it out at my publisher's website: www.jorlanpublishing.com/Cat-HouseSonnets.htm
It won the Muse Medallion from Cat Writers Association and Best Poet from Preditors & Editors. I really had fun writing it and was thrilled to hold it in my hands for the first time.

Yes, I have. Funny but until now I haven't got any good topic or plot to start it with...maybe I have less experience. Thought I love to write. So far any little detail that interest me I write it my journal so I won't forget it. Take care =)

I've read some articles and books about "writing", and most of them recommended the writer-to-be to keep a journal. It may come in handy when you want to start writing a novel or other genre of books. In short, keeping a journal is a wise attempt.

Yes, i have started to write a book, but it is still on very early stages, and needs a lot of work to be finished, i hope one day i can publish it maybe... Writing is a lot of work, its not the same thing writing for other people to read and fully understand the ideas you want to express, but it can be fun, and a great experience!
